Job Purpose:
A Senior Planning Engineer is a critical role that involves the development and implementation of project planning section procedures and guidelines for the generation of plans, schedules, and strategies to ensure that projects are completed on time, within budget, and to specified quality standards. This position plays a vital role in the Project Controls team.
Key Areas:
- Project Planning and Scheduling: Develop detailed project plans and schedules and update these documents as necessary to reflect changes in project scope, objectives, or timelines with the buy-in by all relevant stakeholders. This activity will also include the development of the project Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) and ensure alignment with the Cost Breakdown Structure (CBS) with the support of the Engineering Division Senior Cost Engineer.
- Progress Measurement and Tracking: Monitor project progress, compare actual performance against planned performance to generate accurate forecasts, and report any discrepancies. Analyse critical path and constraints to schedule to determine effect of changes to schedule and recommend workarounds.
- Reporting: Support in the development and maintenance of the project reporting procedure. Prepare regular progress reports for the Project Controls Superintendent and other stakeholders, highlighting project status, key issues, and recommended solutions. Develop proposals and presentation of baseline schedules any schedule revisions.
- Risk Management: Support in identifying potential project risks and work with the project team to develop mitigation strategies.
- Coordination and Communication: Liaise with project teams, contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure effective coordination of project activities. Ensure any changes in project plans are communicated to all relevant parties in a timely manner.
- Resource Management: Assist the Engineering Division with the allocation and utilization of projects resources, ensuring optimal efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
- Continuous Improvement: Leads the continuous improvement of project planning and scheduling process and tools, based on lessons learned from previous projects. Additionally, responsible for the training and development of the planning engineer and increasing planning awareness within the engineering division.
- Communicates with other divisions and department for planning and monitoring purposes.
- External – Interacts with Contractor planners in order to develop comprehensive schedules with direction from Project Managers and Project Engineers.
Knowledge, Skills and Expertise:
- Bachelor’s Degree in engineering preferably Mechanical Engineering.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) or Planning & Scheduling Professional (PSP) or Project Planning and Control Certification (PPC).
- A minimum of 15 years of relevant experience in planning & scheduling activities In an Oil & Gas or related process industry.
- Demonstrated understanding of project management tools and techniques, including scheduling, planning, Earned Value Management (EVM), and change management.
- Experience with software tools such as primavera and Oracle Project software’s.
- Leadership, analytical, effective communication, and team player skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple project activities simultaneously.
- Familiarity with relevant industry standards and best practices.
- Understanding of the organization Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) regulations and procedures.
