Job Description

BRANCH ASSISTANT

Join an award winning Library! The Schaumburg Township District Library is looking for a Branch Assistant to join our team. We are looking for an energetic competent and detailoriented Branch Assistant to support our Hanover Park location. This is a part time hourly position with an average of 20 hours a week. Hours are as follows and requires flexibility.

  • Mondays: 9:00am – 2:00pm (Off the weeks working Saturday)
  • Tuesdays: 9:00am – 2:00pm
  • Wednesdays: 4:00pm – 9:00pm
  • Thursdays: 4:00pm – 9:00pm
  • 1st 3rd and alternate 5th Saturday (1st & 3rd): 9:00am – 2:00pm

The schedules are based on the needs of the library and could change if and when needed. The hourly rate range for this position is $14.11 to $17.63; based on skills and qualifications.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Branch Assistant is responsible for assisting and fulfilling the patrons’ needs in the areas of registration and circulation placing holds and addressing overdue matters. The Branch Assistant may also need to register patrons for library programs and activities and is able to operate and assist patrons with equipment and machines. The Branch Assistant is also responsible for representing the Library standards as this position mostly interacts with the patrons.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL EMPLOYEES:

  1. Ability to be a teamplayer and work pleasantly and effectively with all patrons staff supervisors and others.
  2. Ability to learn various job functions perform them correctly and understand the necessity in overall library operations.
  3. Ability to independently function efficiently in a changing and varied environment with frequent interruptions.
  4. Ability to exercise good judgement and focus on details.
  5. Ability to follow all library policies and procedures.
  6. Demonstrates commitment to incorporating principles of Diversity Equity and Inclusion into everyday work.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITIES:

  • Checkin and checkout library materials; collect overdue fines and fees; sort and pack library materials for transport to the Central Library and other Branch location; search for claims returns and maintains claims return files; search for hold requests and shelve materials as needed.
  • Assist patrons in locating recreational reading materials; place materials on reserve for patron; search for materials placed on reserve; keep “onshelf” reserve list uptodate; call patrons and maintain records for reserve books.
  • Process new library patrons; create new library cards; register reciprocal library cards; input information in computer and maintain patron database.
  • Register patrons for programs and accept fees if applicable for story times reading programs crafts and other special programs; distribute prizes; maintain statistics; and route calls to the appropriate location.
  • Assist the public with selfservice resources including computers photocopier printer scanner fax machine as needed.
  • Assist in the opening and closing procedures of the building.
  • Attend meetings and training as required or requested.
  • Treat all patrons and employees fairly and with an open mind; maintain patron and employee confidentiality.
  • Communicate clearly either in person on the telephone and in writing.
  • Cope with the stress of the job and get along with coworkers.
  • Provide professional courtesy to all patrons and staff members.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Working knowledge of word processing spreadsheet and database applications is required. A Library Technical Assistant (LTA) certification is desired.
  • Ability to use workplace technology including email internet intranet and Library database systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to learn various job functions perform them correctly and understand the necessity in overall library operations.
