Job Description

Title: Senior Animal Technician

Location: San Francisco CA

Assignment length: 6 months contract with possibility of extension

Shift: 7:30 am 4:00 pm (includes a 30 min break)

Job description:

Note:

  • Onsite Parnassus MF 830am5pm or 9am5:30pm some on call weekend hours may be required.
  • Would prefer someone with a bachelors degree in biology or animal science.
  • Previous experience handling lab animals/working in a research animal setting (whether this is in college/postbac courses or realworld experience)
  • Key Responsibilities:

    Husbandry duties (30%)

  • Breeding and mouse husbandry within gnotobiotic isolators
  • Preparation sterilization and introduction of food cages bedding water and environmental enrichment
  • Organization and decisions about breeding and colony maintenance (and associated record keeping) to ensure germfree strains remain healthy and viable
  • Tissue biopsy for genotyping purposes and associated tissue DNA extraction and PCR/agarose gel electrophoresis as needed
  • Remedy animal care needs as they arise
  • Maintenance (20%)

    • Cleaning and sterilization of equipment between experiments
    • Gnotobiotic facility maintenance (sweeping mopping ensuring all equipment is in good working order)
    • Facilitating servicing of equipment as needed for calibration/validation
    • Monitoring ordering and restocking consumables as needed
    • Preparation for IACUC/AAALAC inspections and remedy of any deficiencies found
    • Interaction with LARC/IACUC/EHS staff as needed for facility maintenance

    Quality Control of GermFree status/Lab Techniques (10%)

    • Collection of fecal pellets
    • Culturing fecal pellets in aerobic and anaerobic media
    • DNA isolation PCR and qPCR to confirm sterility

    Assisting core users with experiments/Animal health duties (10%)

    • Bacterial or fungal colonization via oral gavage or other methods as needed
    • Collecting and documenting weights body condition scores or disease scores as needed
    • Assisting with euthanasia and organ harvest at the end of experiments (may include downstream processing of tissues)
    • Direct communication with core users re: animal health concerns during the course of experiments. SAT will try to resolve any issues and report to supervisor to escalate if needed.

    Performing and developing advanced techniques in a gnotobiotic setting (20%)

    • Administration and documentation of anesthesia/analgesia in germfree mice (includes strict control of controlled substances and associated paperwork)
    • Surgical techniques including wound dehiscence repair vasectomy and others as required including documentation
    • Development and translation of new methods of administration of compounds/disease models into the germfree setting: examples include injection of cord blood hematopoetic stem cells into germfree postnatal pups for reconstitution of the immune system intratracheal administration of compounds to create a germfree model of atopy and asthma and embryo injection into germfree pseudopregant females

    Record keeping (10%)

    • Maintaining database of mouse colony (on paper in the facility and electronically via mLIMS software)
    • Maintaining logs of autoclave usage testing and book keeping of biological indicator status

    Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Practical knowledge of lab safety and the ability to follow protocols closely
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills in English (verbal and written)
  • Rodent handling experience in a research or veterinary setting
  • Detail oriented and capable of working independently
  • Evidence of precise communication skills and record keeping
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Word Excel and ability to learn and use webbased software for data entry and/or online training)
  • Flexibility to work occasional variable hours weekends as deemed experimentally necessary
  • Desire to learn new skill sets and contribute to the problemsolving nature of our facility
  • Mouse skills including: handling restraint breeding
  • Lab skills including the ability to prepare perform and interpret the following assays: aerobic and anaerobic cultures DNA extraction qPCR standard PCR agarose gel electrophoresis genotyping
  • Prior work in an AAALAC accredited animal facility including knowledge of feeding caging and space requirements for rodents used in biomedical research and the ability to assist training new hires in these areas
  • Ability to recognize sick animals report conditions to veterinary staff or supervisor and assist with their treatment
  • Ability to follow instructions work independently or in shared assignments with others; Ability to explain routine work assignments to others including policies and best practices using positive communication (verbal and written)
  • Prior work in gnotobiotics
  • Education Training and Experience:

    • Graduation from high school completion of training equivalent to the Laboratory Animal Technician certification of the AALAS and two years of animal care experience; or high school graduation and three years of animal care experience in the care of animal species appropriate to the particular job; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
    • Bachelors degree (or equivalent degree)
    • Veterinary Technician License
    • Note: Classification and salary will depend on the qualifications of the candidate hired.

    If the Client extends an offer then the candidate should go through the health screening process.

    • Need immunization records for MMR and Varicella (Mumps Measles & Rubella and Varicella) should be positive if you have negative results in any of these then you have to take 2 MMR vaccinations with a gap of 28 days since you cannot take 2MMR vaccinations at a time.
    • For the TB test you have other available options TSPOT or QF TB Gold or 2 step PPDs for 2 step PPDs you need visit clinic twice and to get these results it may take more than 1 week and should provide latest documents 2019 valid within 3 months )
