Position Description
The Research Professor/Associate is a research track academic rank for individuals who are engaged in research and who are typically assigned minimal or no teaching responsibilities.
The prospective research faculty is expected to carry out extensive applied research in Pomology with emphasis on Date palm physiology and Production Management.
He is responsible for the technical supervision of all the dates palm research activities in Qatar University Agricultural Research Station.
The date palm Research Professor/Associate is responsible for the development and support of the date palm cultivation in the farm.
He will be responsible for providing technical assistance to QU researchers in relation to the development of date palm from cultivation to postharvest processing.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Prepare a date palm calendar detailing all farming management pest and disease control and maintenance required.
- Plan guide and conduct trials and supervising Date Palm research at QU farm governmental and on private farms.
- Organize conduct and supervise a training and skills upgrading program for farm owners and workers in Qatar. Organize group and individual farm training as necessary.
- Advice and report to management on the best approach to enable improved date production.
- Implement and manage the extension program for date palm production.
- Design practical date palm production technology packages to be demonstrated including procedures to be implemented on private farms accompanied by field manuals enabling extension workers and farm workers to apply identified technologies and production systems.
- Develop linkages between farmer owners/ managers and QU Agricultural Research Station.
- Collaborate with faculty members affiliated to the Agricultural Station and other QU Departments and Centers to ensure an integrated and consistent approach of Date palm cultivation.
- Prepare proposals for internally and externally funded projects in which he will serve as a Lead Principal Investigator (LPI) or PI.
- Lead a research team and supervise or cosupervise undergraduate/graduate students and junior staff in their research projects.
- Represent the Station in scientific events and outreach activities to disseminate research outcomes and foster bonds with external entities.
- Publishing research attending conferences delivering presentations and networking with others in the field.
Qualifications
- Ph.D. degree from a reputable University in Agricultural Science (Pomology) in the field of date palm physiology and production management.
- English is required and Arabic is preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of research experience at an Agricultural Experiment Station or Research Center.
- Experience invitro date palm micropropagation and tissue culture is recommended
- Strong record of peerreviewed publications project leadership; a demonstrated capacity to establish collaboration with stakeholders government agencies and international partners.
- Evidence of qualification to the rank of Associate/Full Professor in agricultural science (Pomology/Date palm).
- The candidate should demonstrate research ability and knowledge in the field of agricultural research with strong technical and communication skills.
- A clear research vision and strong record of publications in high impact journals and funding related to the area of research.
- A strong record of accomplishment in securing research funds is necessary.
- Demonstration of establishment of research programs and student supervision at under and graduate levels.
