Job Description

Company Overview:

Housed in the National Historic Landmark the Charles Gates Dawes House the Evanston History Center collects preserves shares and enriches the understanding of Evanston’s history through tours exhibits public programs educational outreach community events and research facilities. Now more than ever the Evanston History Center (EHC) provides a unique lens into how Evanston’s past shapes and impacts the present and future.

Position Overview:

The Director of Public and Educational Programming will play a key role in increasing engagement with the general public including families educators and students in the Evanston area. Their work will tie to one of the primary goals of a new strategic plan: to build EHC into a leading humanities/history center for all of Evanston through multidisciplinary programs and partnerships.

What You Will Be Responsible For:

  • Increase EHC’s relevancy through programs emphasizing a connection between Evanston’s history and today’s interests and issues.
  • Establishing EHC as a hub for civic engagement through programming.
  • Reinvigorate the Women’s History Project in partnership with the staff managing archives and fundraising. The result will fully integrate women’s history into regular programming and tours.
  • Create a content calendar for to support strategic goals.
  • Manage logistics by securing speakers registration day of set up and clean up.
  • Serve as staff liaison to the Education Committee which comprises board members. Steer their activities to align with strategic priorities.
  • Increase relevancy to public school students and educators through programming workshops for educators etc.
  • Work in partnership with the Director of External Affairs to convert program attendees to Members of EHC.
  • Promote programming through social media enewsletters and other communications vehicles.
  • Write and distribute press releases for programs and new programming initiatives.
  • Serve as the public face of programming e.g. introduce speakers at events and media spokesperson when appropriate.
  • Develop innovative ways to engage the public with the Dawes House through new tours partnerships etc.
  • Provide program budgets and descriptions to the Director of External Affairs as needed for grant applications.
  • Create new docent training modules and tours to attract new audiences.
  • Provide support along with the rest of the staff for exhibition openings and the two major fundraisers for the year.
  • Assist the Executive Director by performing other tasks as needed to support the business of the EHC

What You Bring to the Role:

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Experience with humanitiesbased organizations is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to create innovative missiondriven programming and messaging to promote that programming.
  • Strong skills with Google Suite project management software and similar apps and programs.
  • Exceptional planning and organization abilities.
  • Able to independently set and meet deadlines
  • Proficient at creating clear and effective plans and budgets
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; attentive listener and engaging storyteller
  • An energetic and skilled networker who enjoys community engagement attending events and participating in activities to position the EHC for success
  • A history of working effectively with all people irrespective of their economic status ethnicity gender educational level or sexual orientation
  • Flexible and adaptable work style with the ability to work occasional nights and weekends

Compensation Benefits and Job Structure:

This role is a fulltime one that offers a hybrid schedule a salary: of $70000 with a starting vacation of three weeks.
