Position: Mechanical Development Engineer
Location: Peterborough
Salary: 43000


ROLE PURPOSE AND OVERVIEW:



Within Clients Industrial Power Systems Division (IPSD) Component Engineering are responsible for mechanical design and development of engine design for engines up to 7 litres which are used in a range of machine platforms. The successful applicant for this position will join the Component Engineering department and will take responsibility for the development activities of Core engine components and systems designed and manufactured by Client s Industrial Power Systems Division. Core components includes incylinder block/head sealing systems bolted joints bearings geartrain pumps lubrication & cooling system componentry FEAD. Included within these systems is a strong focus on CO2 reduction enabling technologies.


Each project offers the opportunity to work on the design and development of engines intended to meet the latest emissions legislation with worldclass levels of quality and reliability. You will be part of a small friendly team working together to deliver programmes that are critical to the longterm success of a respected global company.



KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Ideal candidates would have a development and component ownership experience knowledge of IC engines and be able to plan and execute challenging tasks/projects with minimal supervision


Key skills for this role are data extraction/analysis failure analysis and problem solving application of simulation tools and methods and practical application of theory and concepts.


BACKGROUND/EXPERIENCE:

Strong technical background (HNC or technical degree preferred in mechanical or automotive engineering) though other qualifications or experience are equally valued. Incumbents must have demonstrated excellent analytical skills and the ability to perform complex assignments. Requires a selfstarter with strong technical skills. Must have ability to communicate technical information effectively with team members and others in the work group as well employees in other units customers and suppliers.


Candidates should be experienced in performing tasks as follows:


Execution of Core Engine System validation consisting of static & dynamic rigs dyno and machine testing

Conducting risk assessment through effective FMEA generation on components and systems to identify and address design risks and determine validation needs.

Be capable of understanding technical issues as they arise and execute root cause analysis through relevant tools methods data analysis and testing to resolve the issue

Understanding of techniques to deliver effective cost reduction on components and larger systems

Conduct or generate reports to support component and system design reviews

Working in a multidisciplined team to ensure solutions meet customer durability and functional requirements

Developing strong relationships with suppliers to ensure design solutions are aligned to high quality and cost expectations

Conduct or generate reports to support component and system design reviews

Maintain communication to peers team leader and stakeholders with progress against planned activities

QUALIFICATIONS SKILLS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:


Essential:

1. Strong technical background (HNC or technical degree preferred in mechanical or automotive engineering) though other qualifications / experience is equally valued

2. Knowledge of Diesel engine core systems such as Rotating Systems Valvetrain Castings Lubrication Breather and Cooling systems

3. Good understanding of Manufacturing principles & processes

4. Validation experience of mechanical components and systems including both rig and complete system testing.

5. Selfmotivation and an ability to manage and deliver tasks to meet established commitments.

6. Excellent communications skills & Teamwork



Desirable:

1. Bolted joint and sealing experience

2. 8D problem solving Creation and Maintenance of DVP&R and FMEA s

3. Experience of running and participating in FMEA

4. Knowledge and usage of Team Centre data management software

5. New design development following the APQP methodology

6. Familiarity with Microsoft O365 including Teams

7. Capable of running CREO CAD software

8. Experience from onhighway or off highway in CO2 enabling technologies within core engine systems. Mechanical systems such as Cylinder Deactivation Variable Valve Timing Variable flow pumps and friction reducing technologies. An understanding of tradeoffs risks and how best to optimise controls would be beneficial.
