Job Description

Rate: Open

Submit a resume and any requested documentation along with copy of all diplomas and/or certificates to support the employees stated qualifications.
Description of Duties

Provide midlevel provider services which include but are not limited to:

  • comprehensive assessments and management of uncomplicated acute and stable chronic health problems of inmates
  • assisting and working collaboratively with the physician in management of selected complex medical problems
  • performing initial comprehensive medical and psychosocial screenings
  • performing physical examinations and risk evaluations of inmates
  • performing basic dental examinations and detecting abnormalities of the teeth and gums
  • performing mental health evaluations including the ability to screen for suicidal risk
  • conducting daily sick call
  • assisting the physician and other providers with procedures
  • administering medications
  • obtaining intravenous access for administration of intravenous fluids and/or medications
  • providing a wide range of emergency services in the absence of the physician including primary care for trauma and lifesaving procedures
  • performing minor surgical procedures such as incision and drainage suturing of lacerations removal of cysts and removal/repair of ingrown toenails
  • after consultation with the physician prescribing medications and treatment for illnesses
  • establishing diagnostic impressions and requesting appropriate diagnostic tests (e.g. laboratory xray visual acuity electrocardiogram etc.)
  • interpreting results and selected laboratory findings including but not limited to urinalysis complete blood counts metabolic panels and various cultures for bacterial infection and antibiotic susceptibility
  • ordering and/or interpretating audiologic testing and screening of distance and near vision as well as colorblindness
  • providing preliminarily interpretation of radiographs including dental radiographs to identify gross abnormalities such as fractures displacements etc.
  • interpretating electrocardiogram tracings and having the ability to detect cardiac abnormalities
  • functioning as a member of a primary care team under the direction of a physician and in collaboration with other disciplines and providers
  • entering pertinent clinical information in an electronic medical record system in a timely manner and following proper documentation procedures.
Providing midlevel provider services may require a significant amount of physical exertion including but not limited to walking bending and periods of standing lasting for two to three hours at a time.

The contractor will adhere to all Bureau of Prisons Health Services policies procedures and clinical practice guidelines relating to midlevel provider services.

Education and Experience

Individuals providing midlevel provider services as a physician assistant under the contract award must:

  1. Be a graduate from a physician assistant educational program accredited by the Accreditation Review Committee on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARCPA) or its predecessors at a college university or educational institution that is accredited by an accrediting body or organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
  2. Have successfully completed the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) examination.
  3. Maintain status as a certified physician assistant including completion of all requirements for Continuing Medical Education (CME) and recertification.
  4. Must possess proof of a current active full and unrestricted license or registration as a physician assistant from a State the District of Columbia the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico or a territory of the United States.

Individuals providing midlevel provider services as a nurse practitioner under the contract award must:

  1. Hold a graduate or higherlevel degree in nursing from an accredited educational program. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
  2. Have successfully passed the National Council Licensure Examination.
  3. Maintain status as a licensed nurse practitioner including completion of all requirements for Continuing Medical Education (CME) and recertification.
  4. Must proof of current active full and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State the District of Columbia the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico or a territory of the United States.

Additional requirements for all midlevel providers include:

  1. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross
  2. One year of experience providing midlevel provider services in emergency care acute care ambulatory/outpatient care psychiatric care and/or medical/surgical care

Preferred qualifications and experience for all midlevel providers include:

  1. Three or more years of experience in emergency care acute care ambulatory/outpatient care psychiatric care and/or medical/surgical care
  2. Experience in providing healthcare in a correctional setting
  3. Additional professional education and certifications such as advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) etc.
