Job Description

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE
The Sales Engineer is responsible for growing the customer base by researching markets, identifying opportunities, and presenting coating solutions to prospective customers in a given geographic region. Sales Engineers also develop customer relationships, problem solve, and document technical services related to the family of coatings and services offered at their assigned location.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  1. Sales of coating services to specific accounts and in targeted markets, consistent with established sales goals and policies in order to represent the company in a planned and aggressive manner. Continuously promotes the quality, services, and performance advantages of the company to ensure the retention and further penetration of profitable business.
  2. Participates with management by developing goals (relating to customer identification, market position, margins, and other significant areas), sales, marketing plans, strategies, and programs that will contribute to the growth and profitability of the company and required to attain established company goals and objectives.
  3. Continuously evaluates sales activities, progress, results, and promptly takes or recommends corrective action to facilitate the attainment of established goals.
  4. Calls on customers and makes personal contact with buyers, engineers, and other company representatives to introduce/promote the companys services and capabilities.
  5. Recommends to customers the type of surface enhancement process (coating) that will most effectively meet their application and performance requirements.
  6. Gathers all pertinent information and specifications required for written quotations.
  7. Arranges and oversees customer visits to build customer confidence in the companys production and quality assurance capabilities.
  8. Investigates, evaluates, and coordinates with other departments to resolve customer problems/concerns. Contacts the customer when necessary to explain customer service issues (late shipments, parts that do not meet specifications, or other difficulties).
  9. Establishes realistic sales forecasts for assigned accounts and markets to aid in planning and budgeting.
  10. Maintains a continual awareness of competitors, their capabilities, prices, and sales and marketing strategies.
  11. Keeps management informed of important developments, potential problems, and related information necessary for effective management.
  12. Coordinates/communicates sales plans and activities with other personnel, as appropriate, to ensure a coordinated work effort and "team" approach.
  13. Prepares call reports and performs related work as apparent or assigned.
  14. Utilizes company business systems, including Microsoft Dynamics (Navision), to enhance personal performance.


Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS (KSAs)
Knowledge/Skills
  • Education
    Bachelors degree or equivalent in marketing, business administration, engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience
    5 + years of related sales and account management experience in a similar industry
    2+ years as a sales representative
    Quality, service, and performance advantages of CVD, PVD, CAPVD coating services (a plus)
  • Equipment
    Metallurgy and surface enhancement technology knowledge
    Microsoft Dynamics (Navision)
    Experience with computer software (Microsoft Office, email and internet)
Abilities
Physical/Mental Characteristics The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an
employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
Employee to communicate effectively with a wide variety of customers, prospects, and personnel. The employee is occasionally required to sit; walk; stoop, kneel, crouch, and drive. To travel by car, plane, etc., at least 50% of the time. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

REQUIREMENTS FOR EFFECTIVE PERFORMANCE
  1. Ability to manage and coordinate assigned sales and marketing functions in a manner that will result in profitable sales growth for the organization.
  2. Thorough knowledge of coating processes, applications, customer requirements/peculiarities, and of production capabilities and limitations.
  3. Specific knowledge of company policies and programs applicable to sales and marketing.
  4. Ability to achieve sales volume and margin goals.
  5. Provides prompt attention and effective follow-through on customer problems/concerns.
  6. Ability to obtain and maintain the respect of others as being a competent Sales Engineer.
