About the role

The Characterization Technician is responsible for performing device processing and testing for applicable semiconductor structures. The Characterization Technician is responsible for supplying high quality, consistent, and accurate data, which characterises various parameters of epitaxial material produced by MBE. The Characterization Technician is quality focused to ensure material delivered to IQE s customers is of the highest quality and is reproducible from lot to lot.


  • Promotes a safety focused culture and identifies areas for improvement on the manufacturing floor to ensure safe working conditions and safe work practices.
  • Adhere to and role model all internal safety, HR, environmental, quality, and cleanliness guidelines and/or procedures.
  • Follows proper clean-room and inspection protocols.
  • Responsible for execution, collection, and supports analysis of data for MBE structures (product and supporting structures for diodes, transistors, FETs, photodetectors, lasers, etc.) processed and tested in the device area in accordance with standardised documentation and customer requirements.
  • Operates all device processing preparation and testing equipment. Assists periodic calibrations and standard wafers scans for all characterization and device testing equipment, including in-line metrology.
  • Assists with work on contracts and internal research and development programs.
  • Responsible for processing and testing to qualify production lots as needed.
  • Performs lithography and wet etching activities.
  • Utilizes knowledge of device electrical characterization to identify and support continuous improvement activities.
  • Supports data and information collection for raised concerns and issues, both internally and externally identified.
  • Communicates and interfaces with Management, Operations, Engineering, and Equipment staff. Understands and follows the process flow within the MBE production environment.
  • Organizes all data and generates preliminary reports.
  • Owns and understands mixing chemicals and liquid measurements.
  • Quality focused to ensure data for material delivered internally to all groups and to IQE s customers, is of the highest quality (consistent, accurate, and reproducible) from lot to lot.
