About the job

The Class 1 Machinist is responsible for machining Our Client parts, maintaining equipment, completing set-ups, completing the change-over process, and providing training and guidance to Class 2 Machinists and Machinist Assistants. Class 1 Machinists will keep parts running and within specifications once the Production Team Leader has interpreted the blueprints and set up the machines for continuous operation. They will also be able to keep parts running without consultation from the engineer and will be self-sufficient in performing the machining duties required until the job is complete.

RESPONSIBILITIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Primary Functions

  • The primary functions of a machinist assistant is to help the MET or MEM in producing good product, and safety and to learn and progress in their technical abilities.
  • Working consists of pulling materials, measuring a machine part, entering data into the sponge, making a machine offset, cleaning the machine parts thru debarring and washing, cleaning the machine and surrounding area, performing machine maintenance or doing a complete set up. Idling watching the machine run is not one of these functions.

Machine Operation

  • Capable of working in a superior manner with no direct supervision. Class 1 Machinists should feel comfortable as problem solvers and must be able to find solutions quickly and easily.
  • Operates two or three machines during normal production.
  • Identifies different types of tooling such as drills, end mills, reamers and inserts and know how to properly use them.
  • Recognizes broken and/or worn tooling. Sharpens/replaces and resets tools in an efficient manner.
  • Maintains production goals through attention to the machining process from start to finish. Ensures that material, tooling is ready at the machine when needed. Parts should be inspected, debarred, properly tagged and moved to the next operation in an efficient manner.
  • Assists Class 2 Machinists in accomplishing the same. Verifies estimated versus actual cycle times as well as Sponge cycle time and other Sponge inputs as required. Documents on SS send to CR.
  • Ensures that parts are efficiently and accurately processed according to requirements, moved to the next operation.
  • Maintains a high level of attention to machine operations. Notifies the PTL of any mechanical problems.
  • Uses measuring and inspection equipment, and inspects parts accurately to the ten-thousandths, (0.0001), of an inch.
  • Develops ways to inspect parts more efficiently.
  • Strives to understand the operation and machining capabilities of the equipment. Works with the cell PTL to advance knowledge in this area.
  • Maintains visual perception of a finished product and the ability to recognize an out of tolerance surface finish, burrs or any other machining defects. Maintains a high attention to detail.
  • Manufactures a finished part and takes responsibility for the accuracy of the end product.
  • Performs routine maintenance on machines before, during and after a production run and diagnoses machine troubles as needed, notifies the PTL of any mechanical problems.
  • Reads and follows the steps of a designated program completely. Understands the concepts of surface feed, feed rates, geometry, G codes, offsets and other CNC programming functions.
  • Performs tooling offsets in the X, Y & Z axes and sets or adjusts cutter compensation to ensure precise machining.
  • Assists PTL with machine break-down and setup. Follows the Change-Over Procedures and completes this process unassisted.
  • Verifies that Class 2 Machinists working in their cell follow the same procedures.
  • Assists in providing leadership and training to all Class 2 Machinists and Machinist Assistants. Must act as a role model and lead by example.
  • Updates the Shop Schedule part counts every three hours as required.
  • Inspection Works from blueprints, drawings and sketches involving the use of standard machine shop mathematics and Our Client measuring instruments.
  • Identifies material types and alloys using bar stock color codes.
  • Checks parts in the sequence lay out in Sponge by the PTL and/or a QA Inspector.
  • All parts at the bench must be in trays and arranged in a neat and orderly fashion. The status of all parts should be clear to any person walking up to the bench.
  • Holds dimensions to nominal value plus or minus the variation for each specific characteristic and adjust the machine accordingly.
  • Out of tolerance parts should be clearly marked and handled separately from production parts to ensure that nonconforming parts cannot be shipped to the customer.
  • Non-conforming parts should be reported to your PTL for review before being scrapped.
  • Understands key elements of a blueprint, such as surface finish requirements and geometric & dimensional tolerances.
  • Serves as an expert in the use of standard analog, digital and optical inspection instruments.
  • Inspects parts completely and accurately whether working to blueprint specifications or according to Sponge requirements.
  • Enters measurements in Sponge during production as required---usually every 20 minutes.
  • Cleanliness Organizes and cleans workstations daily, including the machine, bar feeder, bench, computer, mats and floor.
  • No oil, coolant or chips should be evident in any areas, especially around the floor of the machine and in tight corners of the machine.
  • Cleans the workbench, tabletop and inspection equipment day as described in the Shift Changeover Procedure.
  • No personal items are to be on the work table.
  • Spare tooling, calculators, drinks, rags etc. may be kept in a red bin at the bench so as not to interfere with other tasks.
  • Keeps the shop spotless at all times. It is the responsibility of everyone to pick up trash and wipe up oil whenever evident.
  • This is an ongoing process and is not only the responsibility of the maintenance staff.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience

  • High school diploma required or equivalent experience.
  • At least three (3) years CNC machining experience working several machines simultaneously.
  • Experience working with Mazak Lathes/Machining Centers or Star Swiss Style Lathes.
  • Experience producing parts once machines are set without support from engineering.
  • Experience in mentoring and coaching Class 2 Machinists and Manufacturing Assistants.
  • Strong commitment to detail and error-free performance.
  • Have a mechanical aptitude. (specific to manufacturing floor employees)
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to multi task.
  • Able to work with minimal supervision, both alone and in teams.
  • Must be a company cheerleader and promote the vision and mission of Our Client.
  • Special certification.

Language Skills

  • Ability to read, write and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures manuals.
  • Ability to write routine correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers
  • Or employees of the organization.
  • Ability to write detailed project scopes, workflows and specifications for internal users or outside consultants.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to perform basic mathematical functions.

Computer Skills

Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.

Reasoning Ability

  • Troubleshooting skills are a must. The ability to clearly identify a problem and to work through the steps for fixing it is imperative.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; reach with hands and arms and talk and hear.
  • The employee is occasionally required to walk and use hands to finger, handle or feel. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
