Job Description

JOB PURPOSE

The EHS Engineer is responsible for supporting all environmental, health, and safety aspects for the Mexicali, Mexico operations within the Medical Device Components (MDC) Business. The incumbent is responsible for the implementation and monitoring of environmental, health and safety policies in accordance with JM Corporate policies and objectives and to ensure compliance with all Federal, State and Local regulations. They will need to proactively participate with the Mexicali leadership team offering solutions to many situations as they arise and actively promote and support a positive EHS culture. The incumbent will interface with the Human Resources department regarding workers compensation claims and, as necessary, property insurance carriers.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

The EHS Engineer role will be demanding, and the successful candidate will be required to take a lead in many EHS activities whilst maintaining the day-to-day requirements of the role, therefore an ability plan and organise workloads and effectively multitask is needed. Attention to detail and the ability to effectively multitask is a crucial part of the job, therefore the ability to plan and organize workloads effectively is required.

Specific accountabilities will include:

  • To provide advice, support and coaching to site. To deal with day-to-day EHS related operational issues, e.g. risk assessments, hazardous waste operations, and responding to general queries.
  • To interface with Government Agencies that deal with environmental, health and safety. This includes the United States Environmental Protection Agency, United States Department of Transportation, California Occupational Safety and Health Administration, local water and air quality districts as well as other local authorities.
  • Management of and responsibility for ensuring the site maintains its ISO 14001 Certification
  • To support the creation, implementation, and delivery of the Emergency Action Plan (EAP) and EHS Improvement Program (SIP).
  • Provide EHS advice for specialist safety programs and activities including human factors analysis, hazard studies, ergonomic assessments, and general risk assessments.
  • Assist with the preparations and management of the site emergency planning arrangements.
  • To lead and carry out incident investigations as required.
  • Maintain and further develop Safe Systems of Work related to JM Life Saving Policies (LSP), e.g. Permit to Work, Confined Space Entry, Isolation and Lock Off and Working at Height.
  • Manage internal audit system in line with international standards
  • Provide general EHS support and input to process safety assessments such as HAZOP
  • Support the continued development of EHS policies and procedures
  • Participate and lead EHS investigations
  • Deliver internal EHS training

SCOPE

  • Working relationships - predominantly working with Operations, Contractors and Production Management, with the ability to confidently interact with employees at all levels including senior management.
  • Provide information and advice on matters relating to all aspects of EHS.
  • Basic day-to-day decision-making authority will full discretion to cease any activity on site deemed to present an unacceptable EHS risk
  • Member of Mexicali Leadership team, with expectation to be involved in and support development of overall site goals and objectives to ensure the site meets business goals in a safe and efficient manner.
