Business Intelligence Developer - Data Analytics / BI

Summary

Involves the development of forecasts, recommendations, and strategic / tactical plans based on business data and market knowledge.

Works with business and / or clinical units to understand and prioritize data and information requirements.

Optimizes the performance of enterprise business intelligence tools by defining data to filter and index that add value to the user.

Researches new technology and develops business cases to support enterprise-wide business intelligence solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Analytics & Report Writing

Collects, aggregates and analyzes data for Department of Quality initiatives and interventions

Writes queries, develops datasets and reports, and produces analyses, and recommendations to support and enhance business and clinical processes.

Identifies and analyzes errors and problems for end users, developing and applying functional solutions and / or conducting specific training as needed.

Conducts on-going analyses of database functionality and capability. Identifies issues and collaborates on developing solutions to data management challenges.

Develops sophisticated SQL (structured query language) queries to support and report templates for ad hoc and ongoing report requests

Assists ETL processes (extract, transform, load) for data warehouse needs

Identifies opportunities to develop forecasts and other statistical modeling to transform clinical and business flow

Is knowledgeable of Analytic capabilities (including governance, reporting and modeling) in other industries and Healthcare Systems, including new technologies to improve and expand on current efficiencies

Collaboration and Communication

Partners with key clinical and business personnel and leadership on project teams to identify appropriate analytic objectives and solutions

Consults with end users to define business objectives and data needs for complex business intelligence solutions and analytics.

Serves on internal committees and participates on cross-functional teams to solve business or systems issues.

Manipulates, analyzes, interprets and summarizes data in order to facilitate decision-making for stakeholders

Communicates findings of analyses and insights verbally, visually and in writing to internal and external audiences

Participates with Training Staff developing and / or delivering curriculum for advanced end user training to ensure user competence, data access, and optimal performance of BI tools and processes. Works with process owners to develop effective reports

Develops and maintains a strong, positive working relationship with staff and clinical departments

Collaborates with IT/APeX and data warehousing departments to:

Establish and maintain relevant data systems

Share best practices and tools

Increase efficiency and reduce redundancy of analytic work products across UCSF Health

Project Development

Assists in defining, developing and implementing plans to meet organizational targets for improving clinical efficiency and effectiveness through data analysis

Supports team efforts to identify issues, gather existing knowledge, formulate hypotheses that provide insight and encourage creative problem solving and decision making

Assists in the planning, definition, design, and implementation of all reports and data dissemination tools, in collaboration with appropriate stakeholders

Identifies decision points that must be achieved to maintain project timelines

Performs other job related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

3-5 years' experience in business intelligence reporting, data mining, data analysis, and/or statistical analys

Thorough knowledge of business intelligence functions, analytics, industry standards and best practices.

Thorough knowledge of relevant internal databases, BI applications and tools, such as APeX/Epic

Highly proficient in all MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) and database applications

Proficient in SQL

Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to manage complex information, assess problems, and develop and effective solutions.

Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey complex information in a clear, concise manner. Ability to produce high-quality reports and documentation.

Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with a broad range of professional and technical staff.

Proven ability to serve as a technical resource providing advice and counsel on business intelligence issues.

Strong initiative and ability to work independently as well as in a team environment

Detail oriented, with ability to manage time and organize competing priorities.

Discretion, confidentiality, tact, and ability to deal with sensitive data involving patient health information

Ability to demonstrate excellent judgment, attention to process and detail

Familiarity with health care environment

Knowledge of key clinical quality standards (CMS QI standards and other regulatory requirements)

Education, Licenses and Certifications:

Bachelor's degree in quantitative social science, management information systems, or related area, and / or equivalent combination of experience / training.

Master's Degree in statistics, epidemiology, public health, operations research, computers/systems engineering or other relevant field OR equivalent work experience

Licenses

Registered Nurse or other currently licensed healthcare professional

Certifications

Certified in at least one Epic Clarity module (preferred: Ambulatory or Inpatient) Pref
