Research Associate - Bioinformatics and Molecular Biology
About the position
We began the search for a professional Research Associate in Bioinformatics and Molecular Biology for the Cassava Program at The Alliance. The position is for a highly motivated and self-starting scientist with the ability to process, manage, and analyze biological information like NGS data (whole genome sequencing, RNA-seq, RAD - seq, etc.), also develop algorithms to facilitate and automate specific steps in the different pipelines needed in each process. Also perform Molecular Biology laboratory tasks, such as nucleic acid extraction and PCR.
Experienced scientists and the Cassava breeding and Cassava Genetics Lab leaders will provide training and career development support. While primarily having a geographic focus on all of Colombia, the position is also expected to contribute to the agenda of CIATs global cassava breeding program in Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa.
Key Responsibilities
Manage and analyze biological data, especially NGS data in the Linux system
Develop scripts or analysis pipelines for genetic studies, e.g., QTL mapping, genomewide selection
Write and support in documentation about the newly designed tools
Generate reports about the analysis pipeline and the genetic study results for group discussion and publication
Help and support the genetic lab manager in basic lab activities, e.g., nucleic acid extraction, Q-PCR and sequencing
Travel occasionally to attend project meetings and support trainings
Requirements
Qualifications and requirements
A bachelor s degree in biological engineering, biotechnology, biology or related
Minimum one year of experience in research laboratories
Demonstrated experience in genomics and bioinformatics (NGS data)
Skilled in scripting languages such as: Python, Perl, or R
Basic knowledge about genetic maps and QTL analysis
Excellent communication skills
Strong interest in working in a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment
Demonstrated capacity to prioritize multiple activities and deliver the results or report on time
Willingness to learn new research approaches integrating traditional and novel tools
Intermediate English level (oral and written)

Terms of employment
This is a national recruited position placed at a BG6, in a scale of 14 levels, with level 14 being the highest.
This is a Colombian national search and will be managed through a fixed term contract of a one (1) year period, subject to a probation period of two (2) months and is renewable depending on performance and availability of resources.
