A Fire Lieutenant is a work leader (crew-chief) responsible for directing and participating in the work of the crew of one piece of firefighting apparatus. Typically the crew chief performs the following. Directs the crew in firefighting activities, working from specific orders from higher level supervisors at the scene; directs and participates in practice drills and training classes for the assigned crew; directs the crew in fire protection inspection functions; assigns crew members to station maintenance work such as cleaning equipment; prepares reports for the supervisor concerning fire runs, training, inspection, or other topics; and takes charge of all firefighting activities at the scene of a fire in the absence of the supervisor.
Conducts recurrent proficiency training and OJT. Applies industry standards and accepted trade practices to perform tasks required to execute and accomplish emergency incident objectives and directions. Attends all training, instructs classes as required, and participates in the DoD Firefighter Certification Program and physical fitness programs.
Exercises caution to avoid personal injury and property damage. Accountable for meeting the requirements of NFPA 1582 Standard on Comprehensive Occupational Medical Program for Fire Departments and maintains the ability to pass physical fitness exam IAW NFPA 1500, and is subject to drug testing and background investigation.
Conducts fire risk management surveys and company inspections. Provides fire safety training and education to the general public, soldiers and other members of the community. Conducts facility inspections and prepares pre-fire plans. Accountable for conducting fire inspections and fire safety programs.
