Roles and responsibilities

The Training and Competency Specialist plays a crucial role in ensuring the technical competence and safety of our freight rolling stock maintenance technicians. This individual will be responsible for developing, delivering, and evaluating training programs, developing and maintaining training materials and iteratively improving them, and conducting competency assessments. They will also work collaboratively with the training leader to plan and track training activities, contributing to a highly skilled and compliant workforce, in accordance with SAR’s CMS.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities:

Training Development and Delivery:

  • Develop and deliver effective training programs in accordance with regulatory requirements, industry best practices, and internal procedures, covering various aspects of freight rolling stock maintenance.
  • Utilize a diverse range of training methods, including classroom instruction, on-the-job training, simulations, and e-learning modules, catering to different learning styles.
  • Facilitate interactive learning sessions, encouraging active participation and knowledge retention.
  • Continuously evaluate the effectiveness of training programs and make improvements as needed based on feedback and data analysis.

Competency Assessment:

  • Conduct competency assessments for technicians using various methods like written exams, practical exercises, and observations, ensuring they possess the required skills and knowledge to perform their duties safely and effectively.
  • Maintain accurate records of training completions and competency assessments, adhering to regulatory requirements.
  • Develop and maintain individual development plans for technicians based on identified skill gaps and training needs.

Training Materials Management:

  • Create and maintain high-quality training materials, including manuals, presentations, and course outlines, and training material delivery plan. Thus, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and adherence to industry standards.
  • Research and stay updated on the latest regulations, industry trends, and advancements in freight rolling stock maintenance to incorporate them into training materials.
  • Manage and maintain a centralized repository of training materials, ensuring accessibility and version control.
  • Incorporate updates and development from other RSM technical sources such as engineering and safety reports.

Desired candidate profile

Collaboration and Support:

  • Support the Training Leader in planning and tracking training activities, including scheduling, budgeting, and resource allocation.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to develop accurate and effective training content.
  • Liaise with relevant departments, such as Human Resources and Operations, to ensure alignment with broader organizational objectives.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 8-12 years' experience in a technical training or competency management role, preferably within the railway industry.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing, delivering, and evaluating training programs.
  • Strong understanding of adult learning principles and instructional methods.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Proficient in computer applications relevant to the role, such as MS Office Suite and learning management systems.
  • A working knowledge of freight rolling stock maintenance is highly desirable.
  • Applicants must hold a minimum of a Level 4 NVQ (National Vocational Qualification.) in verification or an equivalent qualification.
