Geotechnical Senior Staff Engineer
GovFirst is assisting our client with recruiting a Full-time, Direct Hire Geotechnical Senior Staff Engineer working out of South Plainfield, NJ, and supporting projects primarily in NJ but with occasional travel throughout the tri-state area. Our client is a medium-sized, fast-growing consulting engineering and construction management firm with large programs in the public sector and enterprise markets.
Office work will be primarily done in the South Plainfield, NJ office. Field work includes regularly commuting to NYC and other locations. There may be night shifts due to night borings, etc.

What you will do
This position is responsible for assisting with the management of projects, preparing geotechnical engineering reports, performing geotechnical engineering calculations, and performing special inspections in support of: borings, test pits, earth retaining structures (temporary and permanent), soil and rock inspection, deep/shallow foundations, construction plan and specification adherence, and field coordination with subconsultants.
This position requires work primarily out of South Plainfield, NJ office, but also occasional travel throughout the tri-state area.
Responsibilities:
- Knowledge of lab and field equipment for making evaluations of soil conditions/properties
- Proficient in performing geotechnical field investigations and construction inspections
- Prepare daily detailed site inspection reports based on field operations completed
- Perform technical research and utilize computers in developing solutions to engineering problems including geotechnical evaluations to prepare calculation documents; preparation of detailed geotechnical engineering reports; analysis of geotechnical samples; field testing of soils
- Prepare technical reports, write memos, make recommendations and convey engineering solutions/recommendations
- Maintaining client relations
- Managing project budgets for field inspection and design efforts
- Experience with field testing and data collection requirements
- Work with several other team members including engineering professionals, designers and technicians, permit specialists, planners, CAD and graphic specialists, architects, construction management specialists, and several other disciplines
- Managing field staff and reviewing staff field documents/reports
- Efficiently delegating tasks to team members
- Field personnel coordination
- Proposal writing and review, includes pricing from subcontractors
- Procurement of subcontractors for support during geotechnical investigations/design
- Review of drawing sets and calculation packages
- QA/QC of design work
- Approval of time and expense sheets for field staff
- Assist with invoicing
Requirements:
- B.S. in Civil, Geotechnical, or related engineering degree
- Engineer-In-Training working towards obtaining a Professional Engineering license (P.E.)
- 3+ years of experience
- Proficiency in design software tools including Microsoft Office Suite and AutoCAD
- Proficiency with gINT geotechnical engineering software
- Proficiency in LRFD/ASD design and complex analysis software including RISA, DeepXcav, and AllPile
- Experience in analysis of below grade walls, retaining structures, and foundations
- Experience in conducting geotechnical and construction special inspections
- Ability to communicate effectively with managers, clients, and contractors
- Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as strong design skills
- Valid driver s license and reliable means of transportation
- Undergo a background check (required)
