Educational Opportunity Program Advisor Transition Specialist SSP III

• Independently provide comprehensive advisement to students who have problems in choosing pursuing and adjusting themselves to suitable educational and vocational goals.
• Assist students in identifying their problems evaluating them realistically dealing with their aptitudes and abilities as related to their particular needs and circumstances and selecting suitable educational or vocational goals.
• Advocate for the needs of individual students and groups of students to university administrators faculty and staff.
• Provide support and assistance to students facing a variety of personal as well as institutional problems questions and challenges.
• Interact with students in the most sensitive and complex group problem situations.
• Conduct analysis of student skills abilities and previous academic performance for comprehensive advising and support for foster youth.
• Provide academic advising including transfer evaluation course selection and registration assistance to new and continuing Educational Opportunity Program participants in both individual and group settings.
• Maintain records on each advisee including program of study general education evaluation academic progress advising contacts and referrals.
• Utilize advanced human relations skills and abilities to interact with highly visible student groups to help them identify problems evaluate past occurrences and reach appropriate conclusions and decisions.
• Analyze individual student or group problems of considerable complexity and formulate integrative solutions comprising appropriate elements of all appropriate Student Services instructional programs.
• Stay current on CSU & CCC policies and procedures and relevant county and state policies and laws affecting undergraduate students.
• Coordinate and administer programs events and projects within EOP.
• Facilitate student involvement in campus life.
• Develop plans and approaches to situations where few precedents or guidelines exist and adjust approaches and techniques in the face of unpredictable responses and rapidly changing circumstances.
• Recruit train and lead graduate intern(s) and student assistant(s).
• Recommend changes on varied matters both within and outside EOP and contribute to program analysis.
• Engage in considerable administrative planning to develop creative solutions that integrate approaches across organizational lines.
• Work collaboratively with faculty who are interested in acting as additional support persons/mentors for EOP students and/or conducting research related to this population.
• Assist with developing conducting and implementing program assessment(s)
• Conduct indepth analysis of individual student or group problems of considerable complexity.
• Analyze situations thoroughly in search of sound solutions rather than quickly conceived ones.
• Assist in the development and implementation of evaluation methods to assess the effectiveness of programs and services.
• Make recommendations involving broad areas of policy formulation and complex administrative action and for implementation of such recommendations when adopted.
• Maintain required documentation webbased resources reports and student records in accordance with university policies government regulations and accreditation standards.
• May be required to obtain additional training and/or certification as part of professional development based on department and/or campus needs to stay current with industry standards.
• The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar related or a logical assignment to this classification.
• At the direction of appropriate administrator may provide support to other departments/areas within functional area/department as needed.

Experience: Equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. (A masters degree in Counseling Clinical Psychology Social Work or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

• Equivalent to three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems.
• A masters degree in Higher Education Administration Student Affairs Counseling Clinical Psychology Social Work or a jobrelated field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.
• 2 years experience in the program area to which assigned.
• Experience conducting workshops and facilitating events.
• Experience working with students from various ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds including underserved students.
• Prior experience in a higher education or university setting.

• General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management.
• General knowledge of research and interview techniques.
• Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations.
• Ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long range program improvements.
• Ability to obtain factual and interpretive information through interviews.
• Ability to reason logically; ability to collect compile analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentation based on these data.
• Ability to recognize multicultural multisexed and multiaged value systems and work accordingly.
• Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas.
• Thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior.
• General knowledge of the principles practices and trends of the Student Services field as well as general knowledge of the policies procedures activities and practices of the program area to which assigned.
• General knowledge of individual counseling techniques.
• General knowledge or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge of the overall operation functions programs organizational procedures and activities of the campus.
• Working knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned.
• Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action.
• Ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex studentrelated matters.
• Ability to determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature.
• Ability to interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations analyze and define the problem draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action. Ability to carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions.
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals to include faculty CSU administrators student organizations and other private and public agencies and others in committee work and student advising and community contacts.

• May be required to work afterhours evenings or weekends.
• May be required to stay overnight in on campus housing in support of the annual EOP Summer Bridge Program.
• May be required to travel between Turlock and Stockton Campuses.
