Wednesdays 12:303:30pm AND Fridays 8:30am3:30pm
MINIMUM STARTING RATE OF PAY: $15.00 per hour

POSITION SUMMARY
Under the guidance of the principle investigator (PI) students will be immersed in an undergraduate research experience where they plan design and execute experiments. The experiments will assist the PI with gathering data for eventual publication. The students will be trained in various laboratory techniques including cell biology molecular biology and virology.
Retroviruses are RNA viruses that infect the host utilizing a DNA intermediate. Over evolutionary time some of these retroviruses have incorporated into germ cells and became part of the genome of their host (became endogenous). Sometimes these endogenous viruses can become released causing a new infection. The Aim of this lab is to determine how the endogenous viruses become released.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Keep an accurate scientific notebook per the requirements of the lab
Execute protocols according to procedure
Design experiments with relevant controls
Utilize safety training according to OSHA and lab regulations
Assist with planning experimentation via weekly lab meetings
Cleanup and maintenance of the laboratory setting including but not limited to: cleaning glassware and equipment; returning equipment and supplies to their storage location(s) prior to leaving the laboratory; communicating if/what additional cleaning requirements exist to the PI.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
For Laboratory Science Technology (LST) admitted students: Must complete with a C or better minimum of 3 science (instructional area of 806 or 506 courses within the LST curriculum prior to enrolling in your summer laboratory internship experience course.
For nonLST admitted students: Completion of 3 science courses (instructional area of 806.

Laboratory Intern Experience to receive credit for your programs internship requirement.
Laboratory Science Technology students must complete the online activities and discussion boards of the onecredit online course.
Students not admitted to the Laboratory Science Technology program must enroll in:
Laboratory Science ExperienceThis is a onecredit course and is not eligible for financial aid.
Students in this course are not required to complete the online activities and discussion boards.
Should a student be admitted to the LST program at a future time this course cannot be utilized for the LST internship experience program requirement.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Mobility: Ability to move around the campus to attend meetings and events. In addition must be able to work in on around over and under fixed equipment and machinery. May be required to work from lifts ladders and scaffolding.
Manual Dexterity: Proficiency in using hands and fingers to handle or operate office equipment tools controls and/or heavy equipment and machinery
PPE: To wear and work in personnel protective equipment as needed
Heavy Lifting: Capability to lift and carry materials weighing up to 70 pounds.
Visual and Auditory: Ability to read documents and communicate effectively with students and staff.
