Position Title: School Bus Attendant 7.5 hours daily)

Supervised by and/or Reports to: Director of Transportation
General Responsibilities: Assists in transportation of students to and from school and promotes order on the bus creating a safe and secure environment.

- Transports students safely on an assigned/unassigned route according to a definite time schedule.
- Accepts additional assignments as required.
- Provides care and supervision of special education students at all times by taking appropriate safety precautions when students are boarding and departing.
- Completes daily Medicare attendance form for special education students.
- Operates special equipment and wheelchair lifts.
- Conducts precheck on all equipment.
- Assists drivers in insuring seat belts harnesses and wheel chair tie downs are secured.
- Maintains a safe environment within the bus by enforcing rules of conduct and ensuring that the bus driver is not distracted from safely operating the vehicle.
- Reports misconduct or medical issues to a building administrator the students teacher and parents as required.
- Assists students with special transportation needs such as wheelchairs leg braces and crutches.
- Maintains a clean bus ensuring a healthy environment for students and maintaining presentable school transportation.
- Monitors students with special medical conditions such as seizures or heart conditions.
- Communicates with the driver regarding any problems that arise.
- Returns PreK and kindergarten students to school if a responsible party is not present to meet him/her at the bus stop.
- Assists substitute drivers with directions through acquired route knowledge.
- Inspects the bus after every run for students lost items and damage.
- Adheres to the Manassas City Schools Transportation Handbook.
- Maintains current knowledge of Emergency Evacuation procedures.
- Attends inservice workshops.
- Maintains confidentiality of students medical diagnosis issues and student information.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requisite Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of and compliance with the State Board of Educations pupil rider safety instruction for emergency evacuation and fire drills.
- Ability to interactive positively with gain respect of and maintain discipline over student passengers to ensure that behavior is controlled.
- Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials the general public coworkers students and parents.
- Knowledge of passengers disabilities.
- Knowledge of Special Education programs and procedures pertaining to disabled children.
- Knowledge of the use of equipment for disabled children (training will be provided).
- Knowledge of how to operate the lift and the air brakes.
- Knowledge of special handling involved in assisting disabled children.
- Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
- Serve as role model.
Requisite Education and Experience:
- Must be able to read and write; a high school diploma or equivalent GED) preferred.
- Must complete Bus Attendant Training and have a working knowledge of all equipment (wheelchairs tie downs harnesses seat belts)
- Bloodborne Pathogens Training CPR and First Aid Certifications required.
Physical Requirements:
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see read talk hear handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment such as but not limited to: a personal computer calculator copier and fax machine. Some climbing stooping kneeling crouching reaching standing walking pushing pulling lifting grasping or repetitive motions required.
