This position would assist in the design and development of a cooperative partnership to minimize health hazards associated with educational chemicals used in Georgias secondary school STEAM (science technology engineering art and mathematics) and CTE (career and technical education) classrooms. This project would aim to protect the health of students and teachers through lab safety education assistance with responsible chemical purchasing and inventory and eventually removal of legacy chemical waste. Partners could include the Georgia Department of Education and school districts the Georgia Environmental Protection Division the Georgia Science Teacher Association the American Association of Chemistry Teachers local universities local fire and emergency response and commercial hazardous waste contractors.
This is a largescope project that would continue indefinitely and therefore must be designed to integrate new staff and accommodate evolving legislative and regulatory policy and requirements. To ensure the longevity of such a program the Chemical Hazards Program (CHP) must establish guidance materials for any DPH employee involved in school assessments and safety trainings as well as author standardized training materials for students and school faculty and administrators.
To help develop such a partnership interns should be prepared to proactively cultivate relationships with potential partner agencies and organizations assist in the creation of a feasible budget and address other practical concerns such as potential liability. An intern may also expect to assist in the authorship of multiple kinds of documents including but not limited to training documents regarding lab safety and preferred experiments common lab chemicals and safe alternatives and guidance materials on chemical inventory and hazardous waste storage.

The use of wellness breaks during the workday is authorized to support this philosophy and assist employees in meeting their wellness goals. A maximum of 30 minutes in a given workday may be used to engage in wellness activities generally in the form of two 15minute breaks or one 30minute break.

DPH accepts educational credential recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and/or the US Department of Education (DOE) will be considered. DPH will contact educational institutions to verify degree diploma licensure etc.
The candidate selected for this position may be subject to preemployment drug screening and a criminal background check.
