Casual American Sign Language Interpreter

Under the direction of the school principal the Interpreter is responsible for:

  • providing interpreting and other support services to deaf and/or hard of hearing students;
  • facilitates communication among deaf and/or hard of hearing students and their hearing peers the classroom teacher and other personnel in the school system;
  • offers tutoring and/or note taking services to deaf and/or hard of hearing students when necessary;
  • participates in team meetings and assists the classroom teacher in fostering positive attitudes toward deafness;
  • and performs other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

Required Qualifications Experience Knowledge and Skills:

  • Secondary school diploma;
  • a three year Community college diploma in sign language interpreting;
  • 1.5 years of related experience;
  • excellent communication skills;
  • the ability to establish a rapport and work with individuals on a onetoone basis;
  • initiative and commitment;
  • and the ability to work as a team member.
  • Individuals who possess an equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.

In addition the following will be considered an asset:

  • Membership in the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI) and the Ontario Interpreter Services (O.I.S.;
  • and NVCI CPR and First Aid.
