Under the direction of the school principal the Interpreter is responsible for:
- providing interpreting and other support services to deaf and/or hard of hearing students;
- facilitates communication among deaf and/or hard of hearing students and their hearing peers the classroom teacher and other personnel in the school system;
- offers tutoring and/or note taking services to deaf and/or hard of hearing students when necessary;
- participates in team meetings and assists the classroom teacher in fostering positive attitudes toward deafness;
- and performs other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
Required Qualifications Experience Knowledge and Skills:
- Secondary school diploma;
- a three year Community college diploma in sign language interpreting;
- 1.5 years of related experience;
- excellent communication skills;
- the ability to establish a rapport and work with individuals on a onetoone basis;
- initiative and commitment;
- and the ability to work as a team member.
- Individuals who possess an equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.
In addition the following will be considered an asset:
- Membership in the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI) and the Ontario Interpreter Services (O.I.S.;
- and NVCI CPR and First Aid.
