Job Description

New Westminster Schools Career Opportunity CHILD AND YOUTH CARE WORKER

About New Westminster Schools

As one of the fastest growing districts in MetroVancouver we are working hard to support a diverse and very connected community of students staff and families throughout our schools. We currently have eight elementary schools three middle schools one high school three alternate programs two Provincial Online Learning options (a teacherguided Home Learners Program for K8 and Online Learning options for 912 and continuing education options. For the younger learners we also offer a combination of StrongStart programs childcare options and a pilot preschool.

Our district is deeply commitment to building meaningful relationships as we work to address the barriers that some people in our school communities face. This includes actively working to address issues around diversity inclusion equity antiracism mental health and wellbeing and food security for students and families.

Typical functions of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Reports directly to the Principal or designate
  • Responsible to the District VicePrincipal Safe and Caring Schools
  • Supports students educational program through the direct supervision of student activities in the school in the community and in conjunction with the family
  • Assists teachers to support students with challenging behavior and/or mental health conditions (conduct disorders aggression violence extreme behavior withdrawal anxiety and at risk behaviors)
  • Responsible to provide support in the areas of crisis intervention outreach supervision and parenting/family support when directed to do so
  • Works in conjunction with SchoolBased Team to provide support for groups of students who experience social and emotional difficulties (anger management selfesteem friendship social skills conflict resolution etc.
  • Participates in students individual education plan meetings as needed
  • Ensures active ongoing communication with counselors teachers and principals
  • Facilitates integrated case management and completes related reports when directed to do so
  • Seeks advise and direction from the school principal or counselor when unanticipated issues arise which are beyond the intended level of involvement with the student
  • Other related duties as required

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelors Degree in Child and Youth Care Counselling or equivalent degree
  • A minimum of 2 3 years recent full time experience working with atrisk students
  • NonViolent Crisis Intervention Training
  • Extensive experience in social skills curriculum and family dynamics including child abuse and family violence
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and experience providing counselling referrals to appropriate resource agencies within and outside the District
  • Ability to knowledgeably implement a wide range of therapeutic interventions
  • Intermediate level computer skills using MS Office Internet and email
  • Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions
  • Knowledge of basic First Aid
  • Food Safe certification

Additional Information

  • 30 hours per week Monday Friday while school is in session
  • $37.33 per hour $0.15 per hour Labour Market Adjustment)
