JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

Worcester Polytechnic Institutes Humanities and Arts Department and the Professional Writing program invite applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor of Writing and Rhetoric to begin August 2025. The Teaching Professor track at WPI is a fulltime faculty position and affords the possibility of reappointment and promotion.

Successful candidates will have demonstrated experience and a record of excellence in teaching undergraduate writing and rhetoric courses at the 1000 and 2000level strong evidence of professional engagement and a demonstrated passion for developing engaging and inclusive writing pedagogies for first and secondyear undergraduates. Candidates should be motivated to teach writing to STEM students (though prior experience at a STEM institution is not required).

JOB DESCRIPTION

Responsibilities:

  • Teach 8 courses per academic year (two courses per sevenweek term) with a focus on existing courses targeted at first and secondyear students
  • Advise student projects including Professional Writing majors on their course planning and seniorthesis projects
  • Participate in service to and initiatives of the Professional Writing program the Humanities and Arts Department and the university

Requirements:

  • Ph.D. or terminal degree in Professional/Technical Writing Composition and Rhetoric Writing Studies is preferred (terminal degree in other relevant fields considered)
  • PhD or terminal degree in hand by the time of appointment
  • Successful classroom teaching and advising experience at the university level
  • Clear promise of continuing professional growth and engagement
  • Ability to work creatively and collaboratively across disciplines with faculty staff and students of various experience levels

  • C.V. that contains academic teaching and professional experience and includes names and contact information for three professional references (letters will be solicited from finalists
  • Statement of teaching philosophy
  • Materials from two courses (course syllabus and one or two exemplary assignments)
