Job Description
POSITION: PHLEBOTOMIST
DEPARTMENT: LAB
FLSA STATUS: NONEXEMPT
WE ARE SEEKING A DEPENDABLE PRN PHLEBOTOMIST. PRN SCHEDULE IS AS NEEDED MEANING IT WILL NOT BE CONSISTENT AND WILL FLUCUTATE DEPENDING ON THE NEEDS OF THE FACILITY. WE ARE SEEKING PRN PHLEBOTOMISTS FOR ALL SHIFTS (DAYS NIGHTS WEEK DAYS WEEKEND ENDS ETC.
JOB SUMMARY:
Serves patients by collecting and transporting specimens from an offsite facility for laboratory testing.
JOB RELATIONSHIPS:
Responsible to the Laboratory Director
Positions Directly Supervised: None
Regular Contact with all hospital departments and the public

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Draws blood from patients or donors in Nursing Home facility for analysis or other medical purposes: Assembles equipment such as tourniquet needles and disposable containers for needles blood collection devices gauze cotton and alcohol on work tray according to requirements for specified tests or procedures.
- Verifies test requisitions by comparing information with nursing station log; bringing discrepancies to the attention of unit personnel.
- Verifies or records identity of patient or donor and converses with patient or donor to allay fear of procedure.
- Applies tourniquet to arm locates accessible vein swabs puncture area with antiseptic and inserts needle into vein to draw blood into collection tube or bag.
- Withdraws needle applies treatment to puncture site and labels and stores blood container for subsequent processing.
- May finger to draw blood.
- Follow the laboratory procedure for specimen handling and processing test analyses reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
- Adhere to the laboratory quality control policies; document all quality control activities instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
- Follow established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratorys established acceptable levels of performance.
- Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique following department procedures; observing isolation procedures.
- Tracks collected specimens by initialing dating and noting times of collection; maintaining daily tallies of collections performed.
- Monitors glucose levels by performing bedside glucose tests; recording results; reporting results to unit nursemanager.
- Maintains quality results by following department procedures and testing schedule; recording results in the qualitycontrol log; identifying and reporting needed changes.
- Maintains safe secure and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
- Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician pathologist nursing station or reference laboratory; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; notifying
- supervisor of unresolved orders.
- 16. Serves and protects the hospital community by adhering to professional standards hospital policies and procedures federal state and local requirements and jcaho standards.
- 17. All other duties as assigned by the Laboratory Director.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Training:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Work Experience:
At least two years of experience required.
Physical Requirements:
- May remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time
- Frequently move about the departmentand facilityto access various departments and patient care areas.
- Constantly position self to maintain equipment and provide patient care
- Constantly operates a computer office and Lab machinery
- Ability to communicate information accurately so others will understand.
- Ability to observe details at close range.
- Frequently move boxes equipment etc. weighing up to 20 pounds across office for various needs.
