Group Leader – Quantitative Biology

Salary: From £67200 £76000 per annum depending on experience

Reports to: Senior Vice President Drug Discovery

Department: Research and Innovation

Contract: Permanent

Hours: Full time 35 hours per week (flexible working requests considered if they meet business needs)

We currently have an exciting opportunity within our Drug Discovery team for an experienced individual to lead the Quantitative Biology team within Molecular Sciences based at our Babraham Research Campus facilities in Cambridge or Cambridge Biomedical Campus Cambridge.

We are seeking an accomplished scientific and people leader who can articulate a vision for our mission and set direction and inspire commitment for preclinical Discovery. This is an exciting opportunity to work with crossfunctional teams both internally and externally to develop to improve lives of cancer patients.

About CRUK Drug Discovery

As the world’s biggest medical research charity we’ve helped bring eleven new cancer to market. However there is still an urgent need to bring more effective treatments to patients faster.

We have recently developed a new approach to driving therapeutic innovation through the creation of Cancer Research Horizons (CRH). We have brought together Cancer Research UK’s established drug discovery teams under one organisation and leadership team combining our unique pipeline of world class biology cutting edge technology platforms and clinical expertise to 1 bring new treatments to patients faster and 2 tackle the biggest challenges in discovering cancer by seeking out more radical ideas and embracing risk in our bid to achieve success.

What will I be doing

Our new strategy sets out to bring deeper mechanistic understanding at the molecular and cellular level to all stages of projects from Idea to preclinical candidate. Reporting to the Senior Vice President Drug Discovery you will set and drive the Quantitative Biology vision and strategy for CRH. You will lead the Quantitative Biology team to provide all aspects of bioinformatics and computational biology driving actionable insights for projects across Cancer Research Horizons and across the Cancer Research HorizonsAstraZeneca Functional Genomics Centre (CRHAZ FGC) the latter in collaboration with AstraZeneca bioinformatics colleagues. You will play a leadership role in the wider Molecular Sciences department contributing to the strategic direction within CRH and also be part of the extended CRHAZ FGC leadership.

As the Group Leader Quantitative Biology you will lead and drive a highperforming team : 7 colleagues) to provide quantitative biology insight including (but not limited to) bioinformatics mathematical modelling of biological systems genomics systems biology and statistics (applied to the life sciences).

You will be a recognised and passionate leader able to represent the department across a broad range of therapeutic projects and crosssite initiatives as well as externally. You will also be experienced in incorporating external collaboration and partnership along with internal science builds.

What skills will I need

The Group Leader should have the following skills and experience:

  • Proven ability to lead and develop a team of quantitative biology experts in a drug discovery environment including managing capacity and resources to drive governance and decisionmaking regarding scientific portfolio support and technology development.
  • Futureorientated and strategic in thinking style.
  • Ability to generate exceptional results through inspirational people leadership driving performance and collaborating across projects and sites.
  • Ensure equality and diversity is celebrated and considered as part of all decisions taken. Be an inspirational role model for EDI.


Essential Requirements

Education: PhD in Bioinformatics Mathematics Statistics Data Science or equivalent

Experience:

  • Proven expertise in quantitative biology in preclinical drug discovery including deep expertise in integrating and interpreting functional genomics and biological pathway data to drive actionable insights for projects
  • Proven track record of innovative scientific delivery through driving impactful quantitative biology insight in drug discovery programmes including working with pooled CRISPR screening data
  • Confidence and proven expertise in working collaboratively with IT and Infrastructure colleagues to set and maintain innovative technical solutions including in a Cloudbased environment
  • Proven track record of recruiting inspiring and developing a highfunctioning team and optimising team performance in a highly matrixed discovery project environment
  • Strong experience of establishing and leading external academic and industrial collaborations and technology change projects
  • Track record of delivering results across a diverse project portfolio by driving strategic and scientific initiatives
  • External reputation in a key area of quantitative biology (eg Bioinformatics) gained through professional recognition external presentation and publication in peerreviewed journals
