Assist the anesthesia provider (anesthesiologist or CRNA) with equipment, medications, and supplies utilized in the course of the anesthesia provider’s practice. Provide assistance with patient care and department support activities in accordance with department standards.
Key Responsibilities / Accountabilities
Preparation and Setup of Anesthesia Equipment
Assemble Anesthesia Equipment: Ensure that anesthesia machines, monitors, and related equipment are properly assembled, calibrated, and ready for use.
Check Equipment Functionality: Verify that all anesthesia equipment (e.g., ventilators, infusion pumps, oxygen supply systems, and monitoring devices) is functioning correctly.
Prepare Medications: Assist in the preparation and labeling of anesthetic drugs and ensure that medications are available and safe for use during surgery.
Ensure Proper Sterilization: Ensure that all reusable anesthesia equipment is properly cleaned and sterilized in accordance with hospital protocols.
Monitoring and Assistance During Procedures
Assist During Anesthesia Administration: Provide assistance to anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists during the administration of anesthesia, ensuring that necessary equipment is readily available.
Monitor Equipment: Continuously monitor anesthesia equipment during procedures to detect any potential issues, such as equipment malfunctions or abnormalities in vital signs.
Maintain Sterility: Ensure that all anesthesia equipment and materials are sterile and that proper infection control practices are followed during procedures.
Patient Safety and Comfort
Position Patients: Assist in positioning patients for anesthesia administration or surgery, ensuring their comfort and safety during the procedure.
Ensure Safe Transfer: Safely transfer patients to and from the operating table, ensuring they are properly positioned for anesthesia administration.
Monitor Vital Signs: In some settings, anesthesia technicians may assist in monitoring vital signs (such as heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels) under the supervision of a licensed anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist.
