The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water managing wastewater and stormwater and reducing air noise and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country with nearly 6000 employees. DEPs water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the systems 2000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
The Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations (WSO) is responsible for the operation maintenance and protection of the Citys drinking water and wastewater collection (sewer) systems the protection of adjacent waterways and the development and protection of the Departments Capital Water and Sewer Design Program. Plan Review Unit staff analyzes the proposals for the development of private water and sewer infrastructure large public or private development projects and green infrastructure projects.
This position will be part of an internal rotational program offering exciting opportunities to gain experience and knowledge across various areas within the Bureau.
The selected candidate will be responsible to assist for reviewing analyzing the designs to ensure compliance with DEP standards and engineering practices. Essential Duties and responsibilities: Under the supervision from the senior engineer Summer Intern will utilize engineering construction DEP and other standards and practices related to hydrology hydraulics structural engineering and geotechnical engineering to analyze plans submitted to the Plan Review unit. Engages in research of existing water and sewer records investigation or studies to determine the extent of sewer infrastructure within the review area. Prepares written project reports and response letters.

Qualifications :
As of June of the Program year the prospective interne must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).
NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program June August each year.
