Job Description for Senior Associate Counsel Sourcing Legal

This role sits within a fun supportive and hardworking Legal Team who manage corporate sourcing employment privacy and M and A.

This team is part of a larger Legal Ethics and Compliance (LEC) Team in Visas Europe region (including competition commercial UK and EU regulatory) which has consistently had some of the highest engagement scores and prides itself on a creative collaborative cando approach.   

The team works at the cutting edge of new payment technologies innovation and the fintech industry in an increasingly regulated environment which brings unique and novel challenges to include ESG and AI.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Provide legal advice and support relating to strategic sourcing arrangements a wide range of technology and other supplier agreements and the development of template contracts and other general commercial/ contract related  matters.
  • Provide support to Visas Europe Sourcing team to selfmanage a greater number of high volume supplier agreements by developing appropriate templates playbooks and associated processes. Utilising and embracing AI for process improvements and streamlining. Focus on ensuring the sourcing team can selfserve  within risk appetite.
  • Liaise with external counsel and provide support on property related matters such as leases.
  • Identify competition/antitrust data protection technology AI and other regulatory issues resolving these including through working with internal members of the LEC team and/or external counsel where required.  
  • Identify the need for external legal advice and engage appropriate outside counsel on a range of legal issues across Visas Europe region. Management of outside counsel including budgets.
  • Work with other Visa departments across the globe to ensure contracts and advice accurately reflects business needs and policies as they develop. Involvement with the development of AI policies.
  • Management of daytoday legal queries and business deals taking the lead on relevant legal activities with supervision
  • Manage develop and maintain relationships with legal and business stakeholders to facilitate the effective delivery of legal advice and assistance.
  • Provide training to identified business areas on law processes and policies.
  • Collaboration with relevant Global Legal colleagues to ensure that Visas Europe region is aligned with Global strategy in relation to legal sourcing matters.
  • Proactively contribute to the LEC team meetings to ensure cohesion consistency in advice and the general efficiency and effectiveness of the division as a whole.

This is a hybrid position. Hybrid employees can alternate time between both remote and office. Employees in hybrid roles are expected to work from the office 23 set days a week (determined by leadership/site) with a general guidepost of being in the office 50% or more of the time based on business needs.


Qualifications :

Basic Qualifications


5 or more years of relevant work experience with a Bachelors Degree or at least 2 years of work experience with an Advanced degree (e.g. Masters MBA JD MD) or 0 years of work experience with a PhD

Preferred Qualifications


6 or more years of work experience with a Bachelors Degree or 4 or more years of relevant experience with an Advanced Degree (e.g. Masters MBA JD MD) or up to 3 years of relevant experience with a PhD
Essential Skills:

  • Qualified lawyer with previous experience in a commercial legal environment. We will consider candidates who have qualified in other jurisdictions.
  • Previous sourcing and commercial contract subject matter expert experience.
  • Demonstrable experience at a recognised law firm and inhouse environment.
  • Strong academics and training including legal drafting and negotiating and relationship management.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills along with a demonstrated ability to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team context as well as on own initiative to achieve shared goals in an inclusive and open manner
  • Ability to prioritise effectively and manage a varied and busy workload.
  • Positive attitude high level of integrity and intellectual curiosity.
  • Intrinsically motivated and driven to accomplish task at hand.
  • Willingness to approach difficult or complex issues to identify resolutions.
  • Keen interest in technology AI and process improvement.
  • Fluent in English.

Desirable Skills

Second European language.
