Enterprise and Growth Unit

The Enterprise and Growth Unit (EGU) promotes sustainable economic growth and higher productivity for the UK. We provide analysis and advice on enterprise innovation private sector investment and a costeffective transition to a lowcarbon economy. The Enterprise and Growth Unit has a varied and exciting agenda and we work closely with a wide variety of other teams across the Treasury.

The Science Technology & Access to Finance (STAF) team leads work in the Treasury on how the UK can make the most of this opportunity.

About The Team

The STAF team oversees spending by and lead the Treasurys relationship with the Department for Science Innovation and Technology (DSIT). It sets the Treasurys strategy for the digital technology sector and are responsible for policy on priority technologies including AI quantum and semiconductors. It leads on the allocation and monitoring of R&D spending across government to maximise the impact on science and innovation. And it leads Treasury policy thinking on supporting access to finance for small and medium sized businesses across the country including how to unlock more investment into the UKs most innovative companies.

About The Job

This is fascinating and highprofile role leading Treasury policy on the innovation pillar of the governments growth mission a top priority for the Chancellor and the new government. You will lead a 20person team advising Treasury Ministers on how the government can drive innovation and the adoption of technology to seize the opportunities of a future economy.

Key Accountabilities For This Role Include

  • Leading HMTs spending and policy oversight of the Department for Science Innovation & Technology including scrutinising programmes to ensure spending is welltargeted and value for money leading discussions with DSIT as part of phase 2 of the Spending Review.
  • Setting Treasury strategy for the digital economy including working with DSIT to develop and implement policies to support the development and adoption of frontier technologies like AI while managing risks.
  • Bolstering UK tech leadership leading HM Treasurys relationship with the tech sector and ensuring crosscutting policies (on areas such as skills R&D and access to finance) respond to the needs of the digital economy.
  • Leading Treasury policy on science and innovation including ensuring that government policy and spending maximise the contribution of the UKs world leading R&D strengths to the governments growth and other missions.
  • Working in partnership with DBT to deliver the governments goal of reforming and empowering the British Business Bank to support the governments growth and industrial strategy ambitions.
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with senior stakeholders across government including with DSIT DBT Cabinet Office and No.10 and with a wide range of external partners in business and academia.
  • Creating a supportive and inclusive team culture with a strong delivery ethos. Managing resources effectively ensuring staff have clear direction on tasks and are coached and enabled to succeed.

Eligibility Statement
