About Axiom Maths

Axiom Maths is a registered education charity on a mission to make the United Kingdom a more productive and socially mobile country. Half of disadvantaged children who are high attainers in mathematics at eleven are no longer high attainers by age sixteen. That is a huge loss of human potential that affects both those children as individuals and us as a wider society. We are focused on stopping that loss.

We do this by finding children with mathematical potential especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds and guide them along a path to mathematical excellence. We take a dual pronged approach: providing an inschool programme to improve their experience of maths and tackling harmful views in society that stop children from feeling like maths is for them.

We are currently expanding our approach and developing our organisation to meet this mission over the next ten years.

About this role

Axiom Maths maintains a data platform that enables thousands of children across the UK to access our programme. We use this to track attendance measure engagement with the programme and provide our mentors with highquality learning resources for their sessions.

Were looking for a fullstack engineer to own this platform delivering exciting new features and improving the experience for mentors schools Delivery Partners and Axiom Maths staff. This is a role with the potential to deliver significant impact and a high level of independence: youll be the most senior technical decisionmaker in the organisation.

Your choices will help improve the reliability and ergonomics of our platform and youll unlock new ways to support partners to deliver a highquality experience for our pupils. Therell be opportunity to reduce some of the complexity in our existing tooling and work on exciting new features that expand the abilities of the platform.

The responsibilities of this role include

  • Refining the existing tech stack in collaboration with the Head of Data & Systems providing technical insight for new features and ensuring solutions are scalable maintainable and meet user needs.
  • Reviewing the backend architecture of our data platform ensuring robust business logic data integrity and performance.
  • Migrating and transforming data from various sources into a dedicated relational database system prioritising reliability security and compliance.
  • Developing and maintaining integrations APIs and data flows between the data platform and other systems.
  • Collaborating with team members to refine frontend features based on user feedback enabling an intuitive highquality user experience.
  • Monitoring and improving system performance troubleshooting issues and maintaining clear uptodate documentation.
  • Continuously monitoring industry trends best practices and emerging tools anticipating future demands and refining the tech stack to ensure our systems remain futureproof costeffective and aligned with our mission.

The right candidate will

  • Be motivated by Axiom Maths mission to help every child with the head and heart for maths realise the potential of their power.
  • Have at least three years of professional software development experience or equivalent. Including:
    • PHP and Symfony or running Python web services.
    • Frontend development including Typescript and React.
    • A relational database such as Postgres.
  • Have owned a technical product platform or project and added features to it over time in response to user needs.
  • Have experience of working alongside nontechnical stakeholders elsewhere in their organisation communicating technical ideas or tradeoffs with clarity
  • Have some experience of system design and be confident suggesting simple extensible solutions to problems.
  • Embody our valuesstriving for excellence moving with momentum helping others succeed and achieving more through collaboration.

A great candidate might

  • Have been in a small tech team (or team of one) before.
  • Have had a nontechnical manager before.
  • Have experience with css frameworks like Tailwind or SSR frameworks like next.
  • Have experience with docker or a cloud deployment platform like AWS or Heroku.
  • Have worked on a migration project or inherited an existing codebase before.

What we offer

Salary:(depending on experience)

Hybrid team: We all work remotely for part of the week. The successful candidate will work in the office weekly on Tuesdaysat our office near Kings Cross (N7 9QH)

Setup costs covered: We offer a 500 allowance to purchase equipment for working from home. A laptop is also provided.

Pension: 11% employer contribution

Annual leave: 27 days leave bank holidays increasing by 1 day after 2 years tenure (up to 30 days). The office closes for 3 additional days between Christmas and New Year.
