Safety and Fire Protection Technician

1. Provides technical support to UMSJMC Safety & fire Protection program in the areas of safety fire protection environmental management and hazardous material handling and disposal (i.e. air monitoring spill cleanup record keeping).
2. Participates in safety surveys and risk assessment activities to identify evaluate mitigate and control potentially hazardous factors and risks associated with UMSJMC operations and the physical plant.
3. Identifies and assesses environmental effects that may be caused by operations to protect and enhance the quality of the environment; conserving natural resources; reducing pollutants resource consumption waste volume and toxicity.
4. Investigates and assists in resolving patient visitor or staff safety inquiries or complaints related to the Environment of Care.
5. Participates in providing general and jobsite specific training education programs and drills in occupational safety and fire protection in compliance with EOC Management Plans institutional objectives and regulatory requirements.
6. Supports Occupational Safety/Industrial Hygiene and Fire Protection Programs which includes pharmaceutical waste management monitoring hazardous material use and disposal personal protective equipment and indoor air quality assessments in compliance with all applicable UMSJMC UMMS local State Federal regulations and Joint Commission/CMS requirements.

8. Performs functions in support of departmental management including preparation of purchase requests review of invoices and other contract related transactions.  Review related records for completeness propriety adequacy and accuracy of computation prior to distribution or use.  Research product options when purchasing.  Works with vendors to resolve issues related to purchases.
9. Works with contractors to ensure all contractor employees meet UMSJMC contractor clearance orientation and safety training.   Ensures contractors are compliant with OSHA and other related Federal and State regulations and with UMSJMC policies.
10. Works with Facilities to proactively address potential safety issues related to renovations and construction.
11. Manages the fire safety program.  Ensuring compliance with related standards for fire drills fire extinguisher training fire device testing and employee training. 
12. Supports the emergency management program as needed including assisting in internal or external events or exercises. This may include direct interaction with state and local agencies

   7. Ability to develop effective working relationships and maintain good communication with other team members.

   9. Demonstrate ability to establish and maintain courteous and effective relationships and demonstrate sensitivity and awareness of customer needs.   
   10. Current knowledge of Maryland State Occupational Safety and Health Administration National Fire Protection Association and other related State and Federal regulations.  Current knowledge of TJC Environment of Care requirements which are needed to ensure compliance and continued accreditation.

V.           Working Conditions

1. 1. Weekend shift work holiday oncall and overtime may be required.   Must maintain pager/cell phone access to the medical center.
   2. As an emergency responder work assignments may be stressful and unpredictable.
   3. Work is primarily performed in a normal office environment but may require work outside or in austere or harsh conditions

Qualifications :

• Associates/2 year Degree in Industrial Hygiene Safety Engineering or a related engineering field required.
• Bachelors Degree in Industrial Hygiene Safety Engineering Environmental Health or a related engineering field preferred.
• Two (2) years of experience as an industrial hygienist safety inspector environmental engineer or occupational safety specialist or similar responsibilities in a hospital health care or bio medical research environment required.
