Job Description

As a member of the Neonatal Department The NICU Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a selfdirected advanced practice nurse prepared at the graduate and postgraduate level who functions in an expanded nursing role in a collaborative practice model. The NICU NP demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge base in a specialty practice area exhibiting a high degree of clinical competence in caring for select patient groups with acute and specialized neonatal and well newborn healthcare needs like jaundice nutritional stabilization well baby follow up. The NICU NP scope of practice incorporates the skills and knowledge from the disciplines of nursing and perinatal care more specifically antenatal care for high risk pregnancies. Working in collaboration with a physician or group of physicians the NP manages directs and provides comprehensive care for a select patient population in a collaborative interdisciplinary team environment. The NP provides comprehensive patient care using advanced assessment skills and a sound knowledge of clinical therapeutics and provides indirect patient care services to support patient care promote professional education and advance knowledge 
through research and scholarly activities. The Nurse Practitioner will support the Neonatal Intensive Care Units at EGH with collaborative care and care planning with some support to the wellbaby unit; and will provide leadership in the program planning and ongoing development of the Neonatal services at Osler.  This would include coordinating the interprofessional plan of care for select patient populations. The Nurse Practitioner will serve as leader and change agent for nursing practice in the NICU supporting best practices for level 2c NICU clinical care.

The principle responsibilities will include utilizing and demonstrating a comprehensive advanced level of clinical knowledge and competencies collecting and interpreting medical information about the health of the patient. The NP will work to their full scope of practice in very busy dynamic acute care setting contribute to improved outcomes and will liaise and strengthen relationships within and beyond Osler. A key area of focus 
for the NP is in enhancing partnerships with peer community and tertiary hospitals for our highrisk neonatal population. The NP will play a leadership role and perform quality improvement; by participating in policy and procedure development activities/programs; acting as a resource and serving as a consultant to individuals and groups within the professional community and other hospital/agencies. The NP will facilitate educational support to patients families and staff and will be a critical member of the clinical leadership team supporting high quality care for highrisk neonatal patients. The NP role involves close collaboration with stakeholders to facilitate change and promote staff and patient/family satisfaction within a philosophy of patient/familycentered care. The NP provides leadership in clinical nursing practice and serves as a key contact for the patient and family cared for by the interprofessional team. The NP will practice within the five main role components of expert practice education consultation research and leader/change agent. 
 


Qualifications :

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Safe nursing practice in all aspects of the nursing process: Assessment planning implementation and evaluation of patient care
Professional patientcentred care to ensure patient safety and physiological and psychological wellbeing
Providing care in a compassionate and caring manner within a diverse cultural environment
Practicing according to the infection control and prevention measures
Responding to emergency situations by recognizing changes in patients health status and consulting appropriately when necessary using Transfer of Accountability principles
Providing health teaching to patients and families including thorough discharge instructions to ensure the continuity of care in the community

QUALIFICATIONS:

Masters Degree in Nursing and Current extended class registration RN (EC) required with CNO
Successful completion of a Nurse Practitioner certificate in the specialty area of NPPaeds required
Current member of the Nurse Practitioners Association of Ontario (NPAO) preferred
A minimum of 2 years in the last 5 years recent and relevant experience practicing as a Nurse Practitioner required
A minimum of 5 years (or equivalent number of hours) of high risk Neonatal clinical nursing experience required
Current Certification in Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) Required
Demonstrates expert knowledge and clinical excellence in Neonatal nursing
Demonstrated patient/family teaching and staff education
Exemplary clinical skills knowledge and expertise
Proficiency in computer skills and data management required (e.g. Excel. Word. Access)
Excellent organization communication and interpersonal skills
Required to work in and travel between Osler campuses as required
Excellent critical thinking problem solving and organizational abilities
Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with sensitive issues with families and staff
Ability to stay effective and resilient when dealing with adverse circumstances and multiple demands
Ability to work in partnership with relevant Osler staff and physicians and establish and maintain productive relationships
Demonstrated knowledge and/or experience working within a professional practice and patient focused care environment
Evidence of initiative in ongoing knowledge development and reflective practice
Fluent in English (comprehension reading writing and speaking)
Ability to act as a change agent

CORE COMPETENCIES:

Current registration and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
Sound knowledge of nursing process theory and responsibilities to the nursing profession
Current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers course (BCLS) required 
Demonstrated excellent interpersonal communication problemsolving conflictresolution and decisionmaking skills required
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of an interprofessional team
Demonstrated knowledge of patient and familycentred care
Demonstrated experience with patient and family health teaching required
Demonstrated leadership and facilitation skills required

Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and professional development as it applies to the profession and related field
Demonstrated ability to work in a stressful environment
Exemplary clinical practice within an interprofessional team to develop appropriate strategies for patient care
Ability to prioritize patient care needs and make autonomous decisions
Excellent physical assessment skills required
Ability to promote a healthy work environment and practice excellent Client Safety guidelines
Knowledge and understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
Must demonstrate Osler Values of Respect Excellence Accountability Diversity Innovation
May be required to travel and work between all Osler campuses
Excellent attendance punctuality and work record


Additional Information :

Hours: Currently days(subject to change in accordance with operational requirements)

Salary:
Minimum: $62.16 per hour
Maximum: $77.42 per hour
