Job Purpose:
The Medical Laboratory Scientist Transplant is responsible for supporting organ and tissue transplantation by performing highcomplexity diagnostic and analytical procedures. The role holder will also be responsible for ensuring the timely and accurate delivery of laboratory results critical for patient care and donorrecipient compatibility.
Core Responsibilities:
Laboratory Operations:
- Perform and interpret routine and specialized laboratory tests including but not limited to Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) typing Crossmatch testing (flow cytometry and complementdependent cytotoxicity) Antibody screening and identification using solidphase immunoassays and Chimerism analysis posttransplant.
- Ensure compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and protocols for all laboratory procedures.
- Calibrate maintain and troubleshoot laboratory instruments and equipment.
DonorRecipient Compatibility Testing:
- Conduct comprehensive compatibility testing to evaluate donorrecipient matches.
- Analyse results for potential risks of rejection or adverse reactions.
- Prepare detailed reports for transplant physicians and provide consultation as needed.
Quality Assurance and Regulatory Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with regulatory standards from organizations such as FDA.
- Participate in internal and external proficiency testing programs to validate laboratory accuracy.
- Maintain accurate documentation for quality assurance programs incident reporting and corrective actions.
Data Management and Reporting:
- Utilize laboratory information management systems (LIMS) to record and manage test results.
- Prepare and deliver clear concise and timely reports for clinical teams.
- Assist in data analysis for research quality improvement and operational efficiency projects.
Training and Education:
- Train and mentor new staff interns and residents in transplantrelated laboratory techniques.
- Conduct continuing education sessions to ensure the team is up to date with emerging techniques and standards.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including transplant coordinators surgeons and immunologists.
- Participate in transplant case reviews and provide scientific input on laboratory findings.
- Serve as a liaison between the laboratory and external organizations such as organ procurement agencies.
Research and Development:
- Participate in research projects focused on improving transplant outcomes and laboratory methodologies.
- Evaluate and validate new laboratory techniques and technologies for potential implementation.
Qualifications :
Educational Requirements:
- Bachelors degree in Microbiology Medical Laboratory Science Pathology
- Masters degree in a related field is an added advantage.
Professional Requirements:
- Certification as a Technologist or Specialist in Microbiology is an added advantage
Experience Requirements:
- 14 years of experience in a transplant laboratory setting demonstrating progressive responsibility and expertise.
- Expertise in advanced techniques such as molecular HLA typing flow cytometry and nextgeneration sequencing.
Knowledge Requirements:
- Indepth knowledge of immunology including immunogenetics histocompatibility and transplantation immunology.
- Comprehensive understanding of HLA antigens HLA typing methodologies and interpretation of HLA typing results.
- Knowledge of transplantrelated complications such as graftversushost disease and rejection.
- Proficiency in various laboratory techniques including serology molecular biology and flow cytometry.
- Thorough understanding of quality control and quality assurance procedures in a transplant laboratory.
- Knowledge of relevant regulations and standards.
