Job Description

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water managing wastewater and stormwater and reducing air noise and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country with nearly 6000 employees. DEPs water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the systems 2000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.

The Division of Facilities Management and Construction (FMC)/ Facility Construction Services Unit is responsible for the construction rehabilitation and maintenance of all DEP facilities including both leased and cityowned space.

****Applicants must be permanent in the title or must file for the exam scheduled in March 2025.

The Division of FMC is seeking to hire a motivated Assistant Architect to join our team. The Assistant Architect will be responsible for performing professional work of varying degrees in the management of construction related contracts coordination with inhouse trade personnel and contractors in the performance of repairs and alterations in DEP facilities. The selected candidate will assist in surveying and document existing conditions preparation of contract documents drawings and specifications for major projects including new construction remodeling or repair of public works structures or installations for the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Responsibilities include but are not limited to preparing cost estimates and material quantity calculations. The candidate will serve as a key contributor on projects of significant technical complexity and/or impact on agency architectural operations and city infrastructure.

This position reports to the Lead Architect.

Main tasks:


Develop prepare and review drawings maps plans and detail sketches or layouts using various methods and technologies for the construction remodeling or repairs of Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) facilities structures and installations.

Collaborate with senior architects to develop design and scope of work based on bureau needs and project requirements.

Conduct research on materials Buildings Codes Zoning Regulations and other Laws and Standards to ensure compliance with Local State and Federal Requirements.

Participate coordinate and schedule meetings to discuss project progress. Generate and distribute meeting agenda and meeting minutes.

Conduct site visits to monitor construction progress and identify potential issues.

Assist senior architects in evaluating buildings for structural stability HVAC and programming needs as well as generating reports to provide recommendations for corrections of any problems observed.

Review and evaluate contracts contract estimates and proposed modifications to ensure accuracy compliance with project specifications and alignment with agency standards and recommendations for contract awards.

Maintain organize and update project drawings and records within centralized network folders and structured filing system.

Conduct onsite surveys to assess and document existing conditions. This documentation to include photographs using measuring tools to collect spatial dimensions and details of floor plans and reflected ceiling plans. The collected data should then be drafted in AutoCAD.

Represent the agency in correspondence with other city agencies interdepartmental bureaus contractors vendors and their representatives and consultants. Obtains administrative approvals from other agencies such as the Department of Buildings.

Assess facility conditions to determine the extent of construction or rehabilitation to determine if a particular project should be performed by inhouse trades staff or outside contractors.


Qualifications :

1. A Bachelor or a Master of Architecture degree that is the first professional degree in architecture from an accredited college; or
2. A Bachelor of Science degree in architecture that is the first four years of a fiveyear first professional degree program in architecture from an accredited college and one year of fulltime satisfactory experience in architectural work; or
3. A valid New York State Registration as an Architect.

The following are examples of fouryear degrees that are NOT acceptable to meet the education requirement: Bachelor of Science in Architectural Technology; Bachelor of Professional Studies in Architecture; Bachelor of Science in Fine Arts issued by the Architectural Department of a college; Bachelor of Science in Art and Design issued by the Architectural Department of a college.

Note:
A Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York may be required for certain assignments. If required this license must be maintained for the duration of the assignment.
