Roles and responsibilities
1. Teaching Responsibilities:
- Course Instruction: Teach undergraduate and graduate-level courses in various areas of chemical engineering, such as thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, process dynamics and control, chemical reaction engineering, material science, process design, and environmental engineering.
- Curriculum Development: Develop, update, and improve the chemical engineering curriculum, ensuring that it reflects the latest trends, industry practices, and technological advancements. Design course content, lesson plans, assignments, and exams.
- Laboratory Instruction: Lead hands-on laboratory courses where students can apply theoretical knowledge to real-world experiments. This includes process simulation, chemical analysis, and design projects that replicate industrial processes.
- Student Assessment: Evaluate student performance through exams, quizzes, lab reports, and projects. Provide timely, constructive feedback to help students improve their skills and understanding of chemical engineering concepts.
- Academic Advising: Serve as an academic advisor to students, offering guidance on course selection, internships, research opportunities, career development, and post-graduation plans. Support students in navigating academic and professional challenges.
- Interdisciplinary Teaching: Collaborate with other departments or faculty on interdisciplinary courses that involve areas such as materials science, environmental science, or biochemistry, which overlap with chemical engineering.
2. Research Responsibilities:
- Conduct Research: Engage in original research in chemical engineering. Possible research areas include process optimization, environmental sustainability, biochemical engineering, nanotechnology, energy systems (e.g., biofuels, solar energy), and materials science.
- Publish Research: Write and publish peer-reviewed papers in reputable scientific journals. Present research findings at academic conferences and collaborate with fellow researchers in the field.
- Collaborate on Research Projects: Work with other faculty members, students, and industry partners on collaborative research projects. This may include applied research with companies, government agencies, or research institutions to address real-world challenges in chemical engineering.
- Seek Research Funding: Apply for research grants and funding from government agencies (such as the National Science Foundation, Department of Energy), private industry, or research foundations to support and advance research initiatives.
- Supervise Graduate Students: Mentor graduate students (master’s and PhD) in their research projects. Provide guidance on research design, data collection, analysis, thesis or dissertation writing, and publication.
3. Professional Development:
- Continuing Education: Stay current with the latest developments in chemical engineering by attending conferences, workshops, and seminars. Continuously update teaching materials to reflect current industry practices and scientific advancements.
- Networking: Establish and maintain professional relationships with researchers, industry professionals, and colleagues through conferences, collaborations, and memberships in professional organizations like the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE).
- Professional Certifications: Work towards certifications, licenses, or additional qualifications in specialized areas of chemical engineering, such as Process Safety, Six Sigma, or Professional Engineering (PE) licensure.
- Engage with the Chemical Engineering Community: Actively participate in professional organizations, contribute to research discussions, and engage in industry dialogues related to chemical engineering advancements.
