The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) is the largest Fire Department in the United States and universally is recognized as the worlds busiest and most highly skilled emergency response agency. The Departments main goal is to provide fire protection emergency medical care and other critical public safety services to residents and visitors in the five boroughs. Reporting directly to the Executive Director of Fire Dispatch Operations the Director will oversee Fire Dispatch Operations at the Public Safety Answering Center (PSAC1) location at 11 Metrotech Center for daytoday operations as scheduled. The responsibilities will include: Ensure the quality of Fire Alarm Call taking and dispatching by overseeing Fire Dispatch Operations and the effective maintenance of all Fire Dispatch Operations applications and facilities; Supervise and schedule Supervising Fire Alarm Dispatchers (SFAD) Level 1 and 2 assigned or performing duties within the command and a staff of up to 40 Fire Alarm Dispatchers; Establish implement and actively monitor policies procedures and programs specific to Fire Dispatch functions in the field; Prepare and forward reports as required in conjunction with operational reporting strategic initiatives managerial needs; Provide leadership and management as well as training for all SFAD and FAD staff; Serve as a point of contact for the labor unions; Ensure workforce compliance with all FDNY policies regarding Human Resources equal employment opportunity time and leave RighttoKnow and related matters and establish support and maintain an effective system of performance review evaluation monitoring and improvement in accordance with Department guidelines. Coordination of training activities with internal and external stakeholders; Liaise with NYPD and EMS supervisors on site and as needed with offsite activities at FDNY Headquarters and PSAC 2; Provide quality assurance; oversee reviews regarding Fire Dispatch Operations performance benchmarks in critical areas such as processing time answering time sick leave percentage ordered overtime occurrences etc.; Respond to information requests concerning public complaints as needed and provide leadership in an effective liability management process. Meet with city partners and building managers for 11 Metrotech as needed for maintaining and preserving space efficiencies and needs; Provide subject matter expertise and participate in Public Safety subcommittees for infrastructure upgrades procurement and application cutovers as needed; Develop and maintain relationships with various public safety communications organizations including attending industry conferences and joining committees and task forces to improve the effectiveness of Fire Dispatch Operations. Perform Administrative OnCall Duty in accordance with a rotating week schedule during non business hours and on holidays to address critical issues or events during nonbusiness hours liaison with the Chief of Communications during major incidents and directly supervise Borough Operations. Be an excellent communicator leader manager and teamplayer in a fastpaced 24/7 365day per year environment that ensures the success of the frontline FDNY firstresponders.
Qualifications :
1. A four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and either:
a) three years of satisfactory experience as an airport or railroad traffic controller as a fire alarm dispatcher in a Class A Fire Alarm System in radio or in another communication activity involving emergency dispatching including one year in a supervisory capacity; or
b) five years of responsible satisfactory experience in a public contact field of work requiring obtaining of information to provide immediate assistance to persons in emergency or critical situations in which lives and/or property are in jeopardy; including one year in a supervisory capacity; or
2. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to 1 above. College education may be substituted on the basis of 30 credits for one year of experience only for the experience described in 1 b) above and only for a maximum of two years. However all candidates must have a four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and at least three years of experience including one year of supervisory experience.
