Job Description

Position Summary:

The Youth Development Specialist plays a crucial role in providing a safe and supportive environment for youth within a structured setting. This position requires individuals with strong interpersonal skills patience and a commitment to positive youth development. The Youth Development Specialist will work closely with youth to foster positive behaviors promote social and emotional growth and assist in their successful reintegration into the community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Direct Youth Supervision:
    • Monitor youth behavior and activities to ensure a safe and orderly environment.
    • Implement behavior management techniques including positive reinforcement and deescalation strategies.
    • Supervise and participate in recreational activities group sessions and educational programs.
    • Conduct regular safety checks and ensure compliance with facility rules and regulations.
  • Youth Support:
    • Provide emotional and social support to youth addressing their individual needs and concerns.
    • Assist youth in developing life skills such as problemsolving conflict resolution and decisionmaking.
    • Facilitate communication between youth their families and other relevant stakeholders.
    • Act as a positive role model and mentor for youth.
  • Administrative Duties:
    • Maintain accurate records and documentation of youth interactions and activities.
    • Prepare reports and other necessary documentation as required.
    • Participate in staff meetings and training sessions.
    • Assist with the implementation of facility policies and procedures.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; Associates Degree in a related field preferred (e.g. Criminal Justice Psychology Social Work Human Services).
  • Experience working with youth in a supervised setting (e.g. afterschool programs summer camps youth centers) preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills including active listening and the ability to build rapport with youth.
  • Demonstrated ability to deescalate situations and manage challenging behaviors.
  • Patience empathy and a positive attitude.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Excellent organizational and timemanagement skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical guidelines.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to stand walk and sit for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and move objects up to 35 pounds.
  • Ability to respond appropriately in emergency situations.
