Job Description

Roles and responsibilities

1. Train Movement Coordination:

  • Train Scheduling: Coordinate train movements based on pre-established schedules, adjusting for any delays or unexpected issues while ensuring minimal disruption to the overall timetable.
  • Traffic Management: Oversee the movement of multiple trains on the network, ensuring that trains are routed efficiently and safely to their destinations without collisions or conflicts.
  • Track Allocation: Allocate tracks and platforms to trains based on the real-time operational requirements, adjusting for maintenance, emergencies, or any changes in the schedule.

2. Safety and Compliance:

  • Safety Protocols: Enforce strict adherence to safety protocols, regulations, and industry standards to prevent accidents or unsafe train movements.
  • Risk Management: Anticipate and assess potential risks to train movements and implement measures to mitigate them, such as signal overrides, emergency stop procedures, or rerouting.
  • Incident Management: Respond to emergencies, accidents, or irregularities on the track (e.g., signals, equipment failure) by taking immediate corrective actions and informing relevant authorities.

3. Supervision and Leadership:

  • Control Center Oversight: Manage and supervise the activities of the train control center, ensuring that train controllers and operators follow established procedures and protocols.
  • Team Leadership: Lead a team of train controllers, dispatchers, and support staff, providing guidance, training, and support to ensure smooth and efficient operations.
  • Staff Scheduling: Oversee the scheduling and staffing of train controllers to ensure that all shifts are covered and that there is adequate support for train operations.

4. Communication and Coordination:

  • Internal Communication: Maintain constant communication with train drivers, station staff, and other control center personnel to ensure that everyone is aware of changes, delays, or emergencies.
  • External Communication: Liaise with other transport authorities, including neighboring railway networks, emergency services, and maintenance teams, to manage train movements across regions and respond to incidents.
  • Incident Reporting: Ensure accurate and timely reporting of incidents, delays, and disruptions, providing clear instructions for corrective actions.

5. Monitoring and Control Systems:

  • Real-time Monitoring: Use control center technology and systems (e.g., train signaling, communication systems, monitoring software) to track the location, status, and speed of trains in real-time.
  • Signal Management: Control train signals to regulate train movements, ensuring that trains receive proper instructions regarding stop, proceed, or caution signals.
  • System Optimization: Monitor and optimize the use of infrastructure such as tracks, signaling systems, and stations, ensuring that resources are used efficiently and that train schedules are adhered to.

6. Operational Efficiency and Problem Solving:

  • Delay Management: Respond to delays, equipment failures, or unexpected incidents by quickly adjusting schedules, rerouting trains, or reassigning tracks as needed.
  • Performance Monitoring: Track the performance of trains, controllers, and the network to identify areas for improvement and implement measures to increase operational efficiency.
  • Continuous Improvement: Suggest and implement process improvements to optimize the flow of train movements, reduce downtime, and enhance the overall efficiency of the control center.

Desired candidate profile

  • Technical Expertise: In-depth knowledge of railway operations, including signaling systems, train control technologies, and operational procedures.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to make quick, effective decisions in high-pressure situations, such as managing delays, emergencies, or accidents.
  • Leadership: Strong leadership skills to supervise and motivate a team of train controllers, ensuring effective communication and collaboration.
  • Attention to Detail: Precision and attention to detail when managing schedules, monitoring train movements, and handling operational issues.
  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact with train operators, team members, and external stakeholders.
  • Decision-Making: Ability to assess situations and make informed decisions that prioritize safety, efficiency, and operational continuity.
  • Stress Management: Capacity to remain calm and focused under pressure, especially in emergency situations or when managing complex train movements.
  • Knowledge of Regulations: Familiarity with railway safety standards, operational protocols, and government regulations related to train movement and public transportation.
