Safety Engineer

Roles and responsibilities

The Lead Engineer, Safety is responsible for overseeing and enhancing safety engineering practices within the organization. This role focuses on ensuring compliance with safety regulations, leading safety initiatives, and providing technical expertise to improve operational safety standards.

Key Accountabilities:

Lead the development and implementation of safety engineering practices, ensuring adherence to Ma'aden's safety policies and regulatory requirements.
Conduct thorough risk assessments for projects and operational processes. Identify potential hazards and recommend mitigation strategies.
Lead investigations into safety incidents, analyzing root causes and developing corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Collaborate with the Corporate Safety Team to create and refine safety standards, policies, and procedures. Ensure these are effectively communicated and implemented across all operations.
Participate in internal safety audits and inspections. Ensure compliance with safety regulations and standards through regular monitoring and reporting.
Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in safety processes and practices. Implement best practices to enhance overall safety performance.
Risk Assessment and Hazard Identification:
Conduct thorough risk assessments of workplace environments, equipment, and processes to identify potential hazards (e.g., mechanical, electrical, chemical, environmental).
Use techniques like job hazard analysis (JHA) or failure mode effects analysis (FMEA) to evaluate potential risks.
Identify, analyze, and evaluate workplace safety problems, such as chemical exposure, fire hazards, and ergonomics issues.
Designing and Implementing Safety Systems:
Develop and implement safety engineering solutions to minimize risks and prevent accidents or injuries.
Design and implement safety controls such as alarms, automatic shut-off valves, and fire suppression systems.
Ensure the correct installation and functioning of safety equipment, ensuring compliance with safety standards.

Desired candidate profile

Bachelor of Science (BS) in Safety Engineering, Chemical Engineering or equivalent.

Minimum Experience:

8 Years of related experience with at least 2 years in EHSS audit and Assurance functions.

Strong knowledge of local and International EHSS regulations (SAF, OSHA,..etc.)
Developing and Enforcing Safety Procedures:
Create, review, and enforce safety procedures and practices to be followed by workers across different departments.
Develop emergency response plans and ensure workers are trained in how to respond to accidents or crises.
Collaborate with supervisors and safety teams to create procedures for safe operation of equipment and machinery.
Safety Audits and Inspections:
Conduct regular safety inspections and audits of facilities, equipment, and practices to ensure compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., OSHA, NFPA, EPA).
Identify areas where safety protocols are not being followed and recommend corrective actions.
Ensure that safety signage, protective equipment, and safety barriers are properly installed and maintained.
. Training and Education:
Provide safety training for employees on various topics, such as fire safety, personal protective equipment (PPE), hazardous materials handling, and safe machinery operation.
Train workers in emergency response protocols, including first aid and evacuation procedures.
Conduct safety drills to test readiness and ensure quick response during emergencies.
