Roles and responsibilities
Responsible for providing the highest level of clinical care and expertise in pre-operative assessment of patients including pre-anesthesia consultations and visits, management of intra-operative and post-operative care of patients, teamed up with anaesthetists and other clinical staff of the department. The consultant anaesthetist is expected to show a great deal of involvement and commitment in clinical training, continuous medical education and clinical quality improvement activities of the hospital, achieving the goals of the healthcare group.
Key Responsibilities / Accountabilities
- Manage the assigned patient’s consultations as per the directives of Head of Department/ Medical Director.
- Responsible for the initial assessment, investigation, analysis & interpretation of the clinical findings and test results, arriving at diagnosis, treatment, and re-assessment and follow- up of the patients to reach a final diagnosis.
- Prescribe, administer medication, therapy, and/or other appropriate care to treat or prevent further complication of the disease.
- Responsible for explaining procedures and discussing diagnostic results or prescribed treatments with the patients and/or with the authorized attendants.
- Monitor the patient’s condition and progress and re-evaluate/ re-assessment and treat the patient accordingly.
- Refer the patient to other consultants/specialists when necessary, also consult, or provide consulting services to, other physicians whenever requested.
- Undertake daily rounds on Patients admitted under his/her name and any referred patients.
- Document and ensure completeness of all medical records of the patients as per the policies of the hospital and update on the progress of the patient appropriately.
- Authenticate the medical records at initial entries and progress notes by logging in with own username and password in Patient Health Records.
- Review and validate the entries and notes of all junior medical staff in case of patients under his care.
- Perform diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures for which the Consultant is privileged for.
- Approve the completed discharge summary, follow-up plan, medical report of the patients.
- Assume duties as the Head of the department as and when required by the management.
- Ensure the implementation of all approved policies, procedures, rules, regulations, protocols, guidelines and clinical pathways that guide and support the provision of clinical services.
- Direct, supervise and coordinate the activities of specialists, residents, nurses, therapists, assistants and other medical staff involved in patient care.
- Advise and contribute to the development of policies and procedures as part of the continuous quality improvement program of the department.
- Serve on Departmental / Hospital Committees as required.
- Ensure that Islamic Values and Medical Ethics are respected and strictly observed.
- Responsible to be On-Call as per hospital policy.
- Attend the Code Blue, whenever applicable, and should be involved in all other emergency codes of the hospital.
- Provide the Patient Medical reports and information as and when required by the Head of the department or Hospital Administrator/Medical Director of the Hospital.
- Identify and bring all Medico-Legal Cases to the notice of the management on time in accordance with the hospital policy.
- Participate in the provision of clinical / academic activities of the hospital.
- Play an active role in the education of the patient and his/ her family on a healthy lifestyle. Contributes to awareness and education of the community, in general, on issues related to health.
- Be regular and punctual in the duties assigned as per the schedule
- Follow all hospital policies and procedures.
- Obtain informed consent for all patients in accordance with hospital policy for the undertaking of any diagnostic procedure, operation, test or procedure.
- Participate in, and lead person-centered care initiatives undertaken by HMG.
- Provide orientation, bedside training and supervision to undergraduate and postgraduate trainees (interns, residents and fellows) as assigned.
- Participate in self-and others’ education, training and development as applicable and department’s educational activities and training programs of the department.

- Perform other applicable task and duties assigned within the realm of his/her knowledge, skills and abilities.
Desired candidate profile
Graduate of Medical School, recognized by the Medical Council of the country of origin.
Completion of appropriate internship and residency programs
Post-graduate qualifications in the specialty.
Experience
At least three (3) years of practice in his / her specialty after obtaining the higher degree in a Tertiary Care Hospital.
Subspecialty degree or structured subspecialty training preferred.
Preoperative Assessment & Planning:
Conduct comprehensive preoperative evaluations of patients, including assessing medical history, allergies, medications, and risk factors.
Develop personalized anesthesia care plans based on the patient’s health status, the nature of the surgery, and any underlying medical conditions (e.g., cardiovascular disease, diabetes).
Discuss anesthesia options and potential risks with patients, ensuring informed consent is obtained.
Anesthesia Administration & Monitoring:
Administer anesthesia (general, regional, or local) during surgical or diagnostic procedures.
Monitor patients’ vital signs (e.g., heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels) and adjust anesthesia levels as necessary.
Manage airway, breathing, and circulation to ensure optimal patient safety and comfort.
Respond quickly to any anesthesia-related complications such as hypotension, respiratory distress, or allergic reactions.
Postoperative Care & Pain Management:
Provide immediate postoperative care, managing pain control through appropriate analgesic methods (e.g., intravenous analgesics, epidural analgesia, patient-controlled analgesia).
Monitor patients in the recovery room or intensive care unit for any adverse reactions or complications.
Develop and implement long-term pain management plans, particularly for patients undergoing major surgeries.
