The University of Maryland Medical Center is seeking nurse graduates with a desire to join our premier multidisciplinary team in our Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center. Located at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) in downtown Baltimore near the Inner Harbor and Camden Yards; you wont find a more vibrant place to work!

The Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center Hematology and Medical Oncology unit consists of two 16 bed inpatient units focusing on the care of hematology and medical oncology patients. Care provided includes a wide range of acuity levels of patients on the cancer care continuum. Care ranges from initial diagnosis and treatment diseaserelated symptom management and pain control longterm survivorship or end of life.

What You Will Do:

We are seeking nurse graduates who will be competent in the skills/knowledge required and fully participate in unit governance. He/she will practice and adhere to the guidelines specified in the UMMC Professional Nurse Job Charter. Independently provides and coordinates care provided to patients within a clinical specialty. Serves as a fully effective and participative member of the multidisciplinary patient care services team.

  • We are a closeknit unit that works as a team.
  • Nurses are viewed as colleagues in our partnership with the medical team with a multidiscipline approach to care. This includes providing integrated care working with the physicians social workers pharmacists and nurse practitioners.
  • Our patient ratio during the day shift is 3:1. You will have the opportunity to build relationships with families and many times patients will return to the unit to give updates and say Thank You.
  • Many of our staff have worked together for more than ten years.

This nurse will be competent in the skills/knowledge required and fully participate in unit governance. He/she will practice and adhere to the guidelines specified in the UMMC Professional Nurse Job Charter. Independently provides and coordinates care provided to patients within a clinical specialty. Serves as a fully effective and participative member of the multidisciplinary patient care services team. Demonstrates and models the full range of nursing professional practice in both care provided and in participation in the development of strategies to improve patient outcomes satisfaction with service and costeffectiveness at the unit level. Is accountable to patients and families for the processes and outcomes of care during an episode of care. Is accountable to peers for the advancement of group practice on the unit and to the nurse manager for the totality of work performance.

 

General Summary

Under direct supervision of a registered nurse participates in the nursing process by delivering care to patients and their families.  Duties and responsibilities include direct care activities required in daily nursing practice on the assigned unit.

 

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification.  They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

 

Nurse Graduates perform various routine nursing support functions as listed below.  These functions may vary depending upon the unit to which the Nurse Graduate is assigned.

  1. After successful completion of an organized staff development program which includes an evaluation that the nurse graduate is competent through skills validation the nurse graduate may perform and document routine procedures taught within the nurse graduates generic nursing program including but not limited to:
    1. Documenting in the medical record using the initials NG after the nurse graduates name as credentials
    2. Assisting the Registered Nurse assigned to the patient with the assessment of the patient by monitoring parameters outlined by the Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nursing Standards of Practice.
    3. Identifying recording and reporting overt findings to the Registered Nurse concerning the physical and mental condition of a patient in accordance with the Nursing Documentation policy.
    4. Assisting the Registered Nurse assigned to the patient with the implementation of nursing care by performing nursing care activities as delegated and supervised by the Registered Nurse such as:
      1. Performing patient assessments after the initial assessment or after the first assessment of the shift has been performed by the registered nurse
      2. Assisting with indwelling and intermittent urinary bladder catheterizations by performing catheter insertion catheter care and removal.
      3. Providing direct patient care such as personal hygiene care positioning ambulating transporting nutritional intake/ feeding obtaining specimens and performing blood sugar checks.
      4. Performing routine patient care and administrative procedures on the unit such as dressing changes calculating body intake and output measures and shift totals.
      5. Assisting with patient admission and/or discharge by setting up special equipment and recording vital signs.
      6. Assisting with intravenous therapy by gathering equipment for starting IV fluids preparing the patient as directed by the Registered Nurse and monitoring IV rate.
  2. Assists the Registered Nurse in patient status evaluation by reporting patient information such as vital signs or response to nursing actions such as pain management interventions.
    1. Verbally reports to the nurse significant changes in patients physical and cognitive condition.
    2. Documents patient information such as vital signs intake and output on appropriate forms promptly clearly and completely as stipulated in the Nursing Documentation policy.
  3. The nurse graduate may administer medications under the DIRECT supervision of an RN.  The nurse graduate may NOT administer medications independently.
  4. Performs CPR as needed.
  5. Follows institutional infection control guidelines.
  6. Follows/implements established institutional/unit policies and procedures to ensure patient safety.
  7. Communicates effectively with patients families visitors and other members of the health care team demonstrating positive guest relations skills and treating patient information confidentially.
  8. Performs general support services for the unit and patient which may include running unit errands procuring equipment and taking and relaying messages accurately and timely.

Qualifications :

Education and Experience

  1. Graduate from an accredited school of nursing is required. 
  2. If graduate is completing the initial examination:  testing must be completed within 90 days of the date that the graduate completed the school nursing program.
