The Clinical Specialist Pharmacist is an expert pharmacist practitioner who relies on skills of comprehensive knowledge and experience who maintains practice by ongoing literature review and selfevaluation; responsible for providing various clinical services including but not limited to the following: taking part in continuing education programs for the medical nursing and pharmacy staff; advising physicians on drug usage and dose control as well as being competent to optimize drug therapy/treatment plans; assists the Pharmacy Leadership team in everyday duties; independent evaluations and recommendations for appropriate therapeutic decisions to and in collaboration with other health care providers; and mentorship of other pharmacists and pharmacy students. The Clinical Specialist Pharmacist for Medication Safety and Opioid Stewardship will participate in multidisciplinary work across local and system committees. They will also be responsible for review and reporting of safety events as well as crossfunctional performance improvement work and education.
Key Responsibilities include the following:
Provides pharmaceutical care to patients including the promotion of optimal drug therapy and safe use of medications. Assesses patientspecific data to evaluate medication needs verifies medication orders and oversees the preparation dispensing distribution and monitoring of all medications.
Collaborates and consults with and provides education to pharmacy and medical staff nurses allied health professionals patients and caregivers. Acts as a preceptor for students as directed.
Manages care quality and costs by engaging in the systematic and continuous process of evaluating and improving the utilization of medications in a patient population in order to enhance the quality safety efficiency and costeffectiveness of the medication use process.
Supports interdisciplinary rounds prepares materials and participates in facility committees and or implements strategic initiatives.
Takes a leadership role in continuous quality improvement efforts and represents the department as an interdisciplinary interface in the assigned specialty areas.
Participates in the development of drug and disease statebased clinical practice guidelines that influence clinical practice. Assures compliance of prescribers with clinical practice guidelines and other medication policies.
Qualifications :
Experience:
6 years experience or PGY2 specialty residency OR
3 years experience plus PGY1 OR
3 years experience plus specialty certification
Licensure:
Maryland pharmacist licensure required
Board Certification strongly preferred
