General Summary
Under limited supervision the certified wound ostomy and continence nurse (WOCN) provides consultation collaboration and coordination of wound ostomy and continence care and education for staff physicians and patients
Reporting Relationships
Reports to the Wound Ostomy and Continence Nursing Nurse Manager
Qualifications :
Bachelors degree required. Two to four years of recent relevant clinical nursing experience required.
Current RN licensure with Maryland State Board of Nursing required.
Graduation from a WOCNaccredited wound ostomy continence program or satisfactory completion of an accredited program required.
Certification by the Wound Ostomy and Continence Nursing Certification Board required.
The acceptable WOCNCB certifications are:
Certified Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse (CWOCN)
Certified Wound Ostomy Nurse (CWON)
Certified Wound Care Nurse (CWCN)
BLS required.
Working Conditions
Work is primarily performed in clean welllighted patient care areas. May be exposed to frequent interruptions and multiple crisis situations. Must be able to work under physical and mental stress for duration of shift. May be physically and verbally abused by patients. Works primarily day shift but some flexibility to meet the consultative and educational needs of patients families and staff is expected. Potential for regular exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials requiring the observance of Standard (Universal) Precautions and safe handling practices. This position has been classified as medium exposure risk and requires the completion of an annual respirator mask fitting
Physical Requirements
Work is heavy. Standing and walking part of the time on duty. Involves frequent heavy lifting up to and in excess of one hundred (100) lbs. carrying pushing reaching for handling fingering grasping and pulling equipment in accordance with Safe Patient Lifting policy. Requires appropriate listening and speaking skills to converse with patients staff visitors and physicians. Requires hearing/listening to differentiate sounds. Visual acuity is necessary to read charts documents and use various instruments/equipment.
