The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) a recognized leader and innovator in public health and mental hygiene services seeks a dynamic highly skilled Machinist to serve within our Preventative Maintenance Program. The Machinist will be primarily assigned to specific projects within the Unit that is key and critical to the division/bureau.
DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:
Perform preventive maintenance on cooling plants.
Overhaul fans blowers exhausters pumps and compressors.
Clean lubricate and adjust valves.
Inspect maintain repair and replace pumps and pump controls.
Clean areas in and around cooling plant.
Replace valves fans motors gaskets filters belts refrigerant oil contactors fuses compressors capacitors bearings sheaves and actuators.
Use various testing devices to locate defective parts.
Pump down units with vacuum pump.
Use welding equipment to repair refrigeration lines.
Adjust RPM on motors and fans.
Check and adjust gas pressure on heating units.
Estimate field jobs write detailed and accurate service reports and maintain other documentation.
Maintain clean inspect and perform preventive maintenance on all tools welding equipment machining tools.
Inspect overhaul and repair all types of main and auxiliary stationary power plant marine propulsion water and disposal works equipment.
Fabricate obsolete parts from existing parts or sketches.
Direct subordinates in the performance of various maintenance and/or repair tasks.
Prepare reports and requisitions; maintain records and inventories of supplies and materials.
Set up and operates machine shop equipment and tools such as engine lathes shapers milling machines drill presses planers and grinders.
Use computerized maintenance management system to report and document daily activities maintenance and repairs performed on system equipment.
PREFERRED SKILLS:
Minimum of five years of experience in a commercial/industrial facility.
Ability to plan and organize work.
Capable of brazing soldering and welding.
Familiarity with Preventative Maintenance Techniques.
Ability and willingness to learn and practice new skills at an accelerated pace.
Knowledge of NYC Mechanical and Electrical codes.
Possession of EPA 608 certification: Type II or III or Universal.

Qualifications :
1. Five years of fulltime satisfactory experience as a machinist; or
2. At least two and onehalf years of fulltime satisfactory experience as a machinist plus sufficient fulltime experience as a machinist helper or an apprentice machinist or training of a relevant nature acquired in an approved trade technical or vocational high school to make up the equivalent of five years of the required experience. Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of helper or apprentice experience or approved relevant training acquired in an approved trade technical or vocational high school up to a maximum of two and onehalf years.
