Nutrition Education Coordinator Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention

The Center for Health Equity and Community Wellness (CHECW) seeks to eliminate racial and other inequities resulting in premature mortality. With an unwavering grounding in history and structural analysis CHECW works to increase visibility of the harm perpetuated by centuries of racist socially unjust policy while pushing towards redress for the most impacted NYC communities. CHECW addresses inequity across community and healthcare systems in partnership with community faithbased and health care organizations.

CHECWs work focuses on social determinants of health including environmental and commercial determinants and addresses both upstream and downstream factors to improve health and well being of New Yorkers. CHECW is comprised of the Bureau of Bronx Neighborhood Health the Bureau of Brooklyn Neighborhood Health the Bureau of Harlem Neighborhood Health the Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention the Bureau of Health Equity Capacity Building the Bureau of Equitable Health Systems and the Bureau of Finance Administration and Services. The divisions Deputy Commissioner also serves as the Agencys Chief Equity Officer and oversees Race to Justice the Agencys internal reform effort to help our staff learn what they can do to better address racial health gaps and improve health outcomes for all New Yorkers. CHECW sits under the Agencys Chief Medical Officer. The Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention (BCDP) strives to reduce the burden of chronic disease including heart disease diabetes and cancer among New Yorkers.

BCDP focuses on nutrition tobacco use the built environment and reducing the impact of cancer and hypertension. We do this work with an understanding of the structural forces including a history of discrimination and social injustices that contribute to inequitable chronic disease health outcomes. BCDP partners with the government healthcare system and community to employ evidencebased policies programs communications and research aimed at shifting environments changing systems and promoting health equity. As a bureau within the Center for Health Equity & Community Wellness (CHECW) BCDP consists of seven units and is uniquely positioned to contribute to CHECWs goal to eliminate racial inequities in and reduce overall premature mortality among New Yorkers. BCDP works to tackle Big Tobacco Big Salt Big Sugar and other commercial determinants of health. In addition to pursuing population level approaches. BCDP prioritizes working with and resourcing community organizations that are embedded in neighborhoods that bear a disproportionate burden of chronic disease. The Stellar Farmers Markets program(SFM) is funded in part by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAPEd) via a contract with New York State Health Department. SFM provides free bilingual nutrition workshops and cooking demonstrations for adults that aim to promote the health benefits of fruits and vegetables and increase skills that support healthy eating behaviors.

The Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention seeks to hire a Nutrition Education Coordinator to coordinate and support the implementation of Just Say Yes to Fruits and Vegetables (JSY) Stellar Farmers Markets program.

DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:
Coordinate SFM program logistics at communitybased sites located in underserved NYC neighborhoods. Plan coordinate and conduct community outreach to promote SFM to community programs and engage with relevant community partners to support program goals.
Foster and coordinate partnerships as well as provide technical assistance to communitybased partners engaged with SFM activities.
Develop and update program materials such as program promotional slide decks; nutrition education handouts recipes and lessons; and resources to support communitybased organization group visits to program sites.
With team support hire train and supervise temporary staff in nutrition education programs including conducting interviews and candidate selection conducting site monitoring visits to ensure program is implemented as intended at communitybased sites conducting oneonone staff check inmeetings sharing regular program updates and by being available for periodic on call responsibilities.
Approve timesheets and monitor staff time and effort documentation. Provide technical assistance in culinary education by planning and conducting regular team meetings to support culinary and bilingual educators build culinary skills share resources and provide updates regarding implementation.
Coordinate equipment for programming including building and breaking down toolkits for workshop implementation.
Assist with the distribution of supplies to educators and community based sites as needed for proper implementation of community programs.
Monitor inventory of program supplies. Distribute and track petty cash distribution for SFM workshop food expenses.
Contribute to and prepare quarterly reports for submission to SFM funders outlining impacts reach and community partnerships.

PREFERRED SKILLS:
At least 2 years of experience coordinating nutrition and/or culinary education programming in communities with lowincomes and limited access to resources.
At least 1 year of experience in a supervisory role.
Experience developing and coordinating ongoing relationships with community partners.
Experience working on regional food systems and food security issues and awareness of the underlying causes of health inequities in NYC communities.
Experience conducting culinary trainings for communitybased nutrition education programs.
Professional culinary experience or education and Serv Safe or related food safety certified.
Ability to lift and move heavy items weighing up to 25 pounds required for biannual multiday workshop toolkit build and breakdown.
Experience coordinating SNAPEd funded grants and or similar work on other government funded programs.
Experience with the Microsoft Suite including Outlook PowerPoint and Excel.

Qualifications :

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to 1 or 2 above. However all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in 1 above.
