The Citywide Office of Occupational Safety and Health (COSH) delivers extensive technical support and advisory services to both mayoral and nonmayoral agencies ensuring the maintenance of safe and healthy workplaces. This includes guidance on compliance with OSHA along with New York State and City environmental health and safety regulations. Beyond technical advice COSH also performs assessments evaluations and provides recommendations concerning environmental factors that could impact employee health and wellbeing in the workplace.
The City Research Scientist I responsibilities will be to:

Provide training on occupational health and safety topics to designated citywide personnel primarily through virtual sessions with occasional inperson meetings.
Conduct assessments of indoor air quality workplace ergonomics and electromagnetic fields.
Perform and analyze hearing tests for citywide personnel using equipment acquired by DCAS.
Review asbestos surveys and provide reports and recommendations to city agencies following best management practices in occupational health and safety.
Attend and actively participate in citywide labor management meetings.
Offer technical guidance to city agencies on occupational health and safety issues.
Participate in or lead occupational health and safety walkthroughs at various cityoccupied sites.
Prepare comprehensive reports based on environmental health and safety assessments conducted by COSH.
Advise city agencies on addressing violations issued by the New York State Department of Labor.
Assist with the annual calibration of equipment used by the COSH team.
Maintain and update COSH records and contact information for designated citywide safety and health personnel.
The position requires travel across the five boroughs using public transportation or a DCASissued vehicle.
A valid New York State drivers license is required and must be maintained throughout employment.

Qualifications :

1. For Assignment Level I (only physical biological and environmental sciences and public health) A masters degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical biological or environmental science or in public health.
To be appointed to Assignment Level II and above candidates must have:
1. A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical biological environmental or social science and one year of fulltime experience in a responsible supervisory administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
2. A masters degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical biological environmental or social science and three years of responsible fulltime research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to 1 or 2 above. However all candidates must have at least a masters degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in 2 above. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in 1 and 2 above.

Probationary Period
Appointments to this position are subject to a minimum probationary period of one year.
