Job Description

Roles and responsibilities

  • Leadership and Management

    • Lead and manage the History department, ensuring that it runs efficiently and effectively.
    • Oversee the planning, development, and implementation of the History curriculum, ensuring it aligns with the school's educational goals and national standards.
    • Provide guidance and support to History teachers, fostering a collaborative and positive teaching environment.
    • Ensure that all teaching materials and resources are up-to-date, relevant, and engaging for students.
    • Set high academic and behavioral standards within the department and monitor the progress of students to ensure success.
    • Manage the department's budget and resources, ensuring that the department has the necessary materials and equipment to deliver quality education.
  • Curriculum Development and Implementation

    • Lead the design and review of the History curriculum across all year groups, ensuring a comprehensive and cohesive program that meets the needs of all students.
    • Incorporate diverse historical perspectives, themes, and methodologies into the curriculum to provide a well-rounded education.
    • Ensure the curriculum fosters critical thinking, historical inquiry, and the development of analytical and research skills.
    • Monitor and evaluate the delivery of the curriculum to ensure it is taught effectively across all levels.
    • Ensure the inclusion of key historical skills, such as source analysis, essay writing, and debate, to prepare students for exams and future academic pursuits.
  • Staff Development and Support

    • Mentor, support, and guide History teachers, providing feedback on their teaching practice and helping them to improve their effectiveness.
    • Organize and facilitate professional development opportunities for the History department, such as workshops, training sessions, and conferences.
    • Conduct regular departmental meetings to discuss teaching strategies, student progress, and any departmental issues.
    • Encourage a collaborative approach among History teachers, fostering teamwork and shared resources.
    • Ensure new teachers or staff members are integrated into the department smoothly and provide ongoing support throughout their tenure.
  • Student Achievement and Progress Monitoring

    • Monitor and track student progress across all year groups, ensuring that all students are challenged and supported to reach their full potential in History.
    • Analyze student performance data (e.g., test results, assessments, homework) and identify areas for improvement, implementing strategies to address any gaps in learning.
    • Set departmental goals and targets to improve student outcomes, regularly reviewing and adjusting strategies as needed.
    • Provide intervention for students who are underperforming or who may need additional support to succeed in History.
    • Encourage students to take part in extracurricular activities related to History, such as history clubs, debates, or field trips.
  • Assessment and Evaluation

    • Develop and implement fair, consistent, and rigorous assessment practices that accurately measure student progress and understanding.
    • Ensure that assessments are aligned with the curriculum and provide meaningful feedback to help students improve.
    • Review and evaluate the effectiveness of the department’s assessment policies, making adjustments as needed to ensure fairness and rigor.

    • Experience in curriculum development and review, including creating and implementing engaging, high-quality lesson plans.
    • Proven experience in managing assessments, setting goals, and tracking student progress.
    • Experience in supporting and mentoring staff, with a focus on improving teaching practice and professional development.
  • Teaching Skills

    • Strong subject knowledge in History, with expertise across various historical periods, regions, and themes.
    • The ability to plan and deliver high-quality, engaging, and differentiated lessons for students of all abilities.
    • Expertise in teaching historical skills, such as critical thinking, source analysis, and historical writing.
    • Ability to motivate students, foster a passion for History, and inspire them to engage in independent research and learning.
    • Strong classroom management skills, maintaining a respectful and focused environment for learning.
  • Leadership and Management Skills

    • Excellent leadership and management skills, with the ability to inspire and guide a team of teachers.
    • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage a busy department and oversee multiple tasks and projects.
    • Experience in setting clear goals, tracking progress, and evaluating departmental success.
    • Ability to make strategic decisions, solve problems, and implement improvements in the department.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with students, staff, and parents.
  • Analytical and Data Management Skills

    • Ability to analyze student data, identifying trends, gaps in learning, and areas of improvement.
    • Experience in using assessment data to inform teaching practices, set departmental targets, and implement interventions.
    • Proficiency in using educational software and systems for tracking student progress and departmental planning.
