Fashion designers are creative professionals who create clothing accessories and footwear. They research trends develop new styles and oversee production. Their responsibilities include:
Creating designs: Fashion designers use programs like Adobe Illustrator or sketch designs by hand. They may also create moodboards to show clients.
Staying current: Fashion designers keep up with trends in fashion fabrics colors and shapes.
Planning and developing: They plan and develop ranges often based on a theme.
Collaborating: They work with teams including buyers and forecasters to develop products.
Liaising: They work with sales buying and production teams to ensure products complement each other.
Pattern making: They develop patterns that are cut and sewn into sample garments.
Sourcing: They source select and buy fabrics.
Adapting: They adapt existing designs for mass production.
Supervising: They supervise the making up of sample garments and oversee production.
Negotiating: They negotiate with customers and suppliers.
Managing: They may manage marketing finances and other business activities if they are selfemployed.
Fashion designers should be technically proficient and have knowledge of pattern making draping sewing and fabric properties. They should also be able to use both traditional techniques and modern technologies.
