Overview
The Head of Department (HOD) for English in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) and Middle Years Programme (MYP) plays a pivotal role in shaping the language curriculum and promoting academic excellence at our institution in Bangalore. This leadership position requires a dynamic individual who is passionate about fostering a love for literature and language among students. The HOD will work collaboratively with educators administrators and the broader school community to create an engaging and relevant English curriculum that aligns with IB standards. This person will be responsible for encouraging innovative teaching methodologies emphasizing critical thinking and cultivating a diverse and inclusive learning environment. As a leader the HOD will also mentor and support teachers professional development while ensuring the departments objectives contribute to the overall mission of the school to inspire students to be lifelong learners and responsible global citizens.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the English department for IBDP and MYP ensuring alignment with IB standards.
- Develop implement and evaluate curriculum strategies that foster student engagement and achievement.
- Support teachers in best practices for lesson planning and instructional methods.
- Provide professional development opportunities for English faculty to enhance their teaching effectiveness.
- Monitor and assess student performance and instructional quality within the department.
- Facilitate collaborative planning sessions for the teaching staff to promote consistency in curriculum delivery.
- Conduct regular departmental meetings to discuss instructional strategies and student progress.
- Encourage innovative practices within the department to adapt to changing educational landscapes.
- Coordinate assessment and evaluation procedures for student work and departmental initiatives.
- Build relationships with parents and the community to promote the value of the English programs.
- Oversee implementation of IB assessments and ensure academic standards are met.
- Champion diversity and inclusivity within the classroom and curriculum.
- Engage with school leadership to align departmental goals with school objectives.
- Actively participate in the recruitment and selection of new English faculty members.
- Stay updated on changes in IB curriculum and educational best practices.
Required Qualifications
- Masters degree in English Education or a related field.
- Teaching certification or equivalent qualification in English education.
- Minimum of 5 years teaching experience with at least 2 years in department leadership or coordination roles.
- Experience with the International Baccalaureate framework in IBDP and MYP.
- Proven track record of curriculum development and implementation.
- Strong understanding of diverse learning needs and effective teaching strategies.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated leadership ability and experience in team management.
- Familiarity with assessment practices and datadriven instruction.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development and research in education.
- Ability to foster a collaborative and positive work environment.
- Fluency in English; knowledge of an additional language is a plus.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Experience in mentoring and coaching teachers.
