Job Description

Roles and responsibilities

1. Teaching and Curriculum Delivery

  • Lesson Planning and Delivery: Develop and deliver engaging, well-structured mathematics lessons that cater to various learning styles and abilities. Use different teaching methods and resources to explain complex mathematical concepts and make them accessible to all students.
  • Curriculum Implementation: Teach the mathematics curriculum effectively, covering key areas such as algebra, geometry, statistics, calculus, probability, and number theory (depending on the level). Adapt the curriculum to suit the class's needs and to ensure it aligns with national or international standards.
  • Active Learning: Foster active learning by incorporating a variety of teaching methods such as problem-based learning, hands-on activities, technology, and real-world applications of math.
  • Differentiated Instruction: Tailor lessons to meet the diverse learning needs of students, including those with special educational needs (SEN) and gifted students, by providing varied tasks, learning materials, and alternative explanations where necessary.

2. Student Assessment and Support

  • Assessments: Design and administer a variety of formative (e.g., quizzes, homework, class activities) and summative (e.g., exams, projects) assessments to evaluate student understanding and progress in mathematics.
  • Providing Feedback: Provide timely, constructive feedback on student work, identifying areas of strength and areas that need improvement. Encourage students to engage with the feedback and use it to enhance their learning.
  • Monitoring Progress: Regularly track student progress, identifying those who are excelling or struggling and providing targeted interventions or enrichment activities.
  • Individualized Support: Offer additional support or remedial classes to students who are struggling with key concepts, ensuring they have the tools and guidance needed to succeed.

3. Classroom Management and Environment

  • Classroom Organization: Establish and maintain a positive and focused classroom environment where students feel confident in sharing ideas, asking questions, and engaging in mathematical discussions.
  • Behavior Management: Implement strategies for maintaining good behavior in the classroom, ensuring students remain focused and on-task.
  • Promoting Active Participation: Encourage students to actively participate in lessons, fostering a collaborative learning environment. Use group work, problem-solving activities, and math challenges to boost engagement and motivation.

4. Professional Development and Collaboration

  • Continuous Learning: Stay up-to-date with the latest developments in mathematics education, including new teaching strategies, technological tools, and curriculum changes. Attend professional development workshops and engage in educational research to improve teaching practices.
  • Collaborating with Colleagues: Work with other math teachers and school staff to share resources, plan interdisciplinary lessons, and discuss student progress. Participate in departmental meetings and contribute to the development of the mathematics curriculum.
  • Mentoring and Support: Provide mentorship to newer or less experienced teachers within the department, offering advice, resources, and guidance to improve their teaching practices.

5. Student Development and Engagement

  • Developing Critical Thinking: Encourage students to think critically and analytically about mathematical problems, developing their problem-solving skills and logical thinking.
  • Career Guidance: Provide information on career opportunities that require strong mathematics skills (e.g., engineering, economics, data science), helping students understand the real-world applications of mathematics.
